That Nameless Virtue

Universities cannot guarantee the moral worth of their graduates

From The Harvard Crimson
By Christopher B. Lacaria

In a little more than a month, Harvard will graduate yet another class of seniors and commend them to prestigious positions in regions far-flung across the globe. Even with the economic downturn, no doubt this class—like all before it—will eventually fill the highest echelons in government, finance, law, and academia.

In conferring the degree, embossed with the university seal and confirmed by the president’s signature, Harvard thereby will stake its reputation on the intellectual fitness and aptitude of each recipient. Few indeed would doubt the natural intelligence, raw talent, and competence of most, if not all, of those in line for a sheepskin. But whether the last four years have augmented or molded those natural capacities in which newly arrived Harvard freshmen abound remains an open question.

Complaints about the Core and the nascent General Education—its lack of common requirements or a coherent, unifying philosophy—are rehearsed often. And the demise of a potential Great Books track within Gen Ed called further attention to this problem. The prevalence of grade inflation and the existence of trendy but “soft” disciplines in the humanities and social sciences continue to portend trouble to those concerned with Harvard’s intellectual rigor.

But these standard jeremiads against Harvard’s curricular vacuity, as just and true as they are, only extend so far. For one cannot seriously contest whether Harvard graduates are brilliant, well read, and extremely likely to succeed at whichever tasks they choose to apply themselves. Yet, despite this, one cannot but have serious reservations about these graduates’ cultivation, moral virtue, and character, over which Harvard as educator claims no responsibility.

In a kinder and gentler era, universities sought—as many of this region’s more ancient preparatory schools still ostensibly do—to educate not only the mind but also the “whole person.” For, in those days, Harvard and others cared not so much that their graduates were successful at their chosen professions as that they were decent, upstanding, and honorable gentlemen who would not bring shame upon their almae matres by their ill conduct.

The notions of honor and character to most Harvard students sound old-fashioned, if not completely absurd. Yet, at one point, such concerns formed the center of a truly moral education. Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics listed “greatness of soul,” or “magnanimity,” among the principal moral virtues—as the “crown” of the virtues, in fact, without which the other moral virtues cannot properly exist. For one who exemplifies all the moral virtues—an ideal toward which men of a previous age continuously would strive—proudly disdains base and trivial matters and values not material goods as much as the well-deserved respect of a good man. The magnanimous man, who seeks great honors while deserving them, necessarily is also a good man, the ideal gentleman.

Neither Harvard nor contemporary university pedagogy esteems this old ideal. The intellectual fads that currently enthrall academia long ago abdicated any concern with ends: Education, under this regime, is merely a question of means. Students indeed may write well and argue their points persuasively and powerfully, but toward which goal and on behalf of which argument they may exercise their faculties are questions never asked. Scientific training, assisted by advanced technology, points toward an ever-expanding horizon of information to be gathered and knowledge to be pursued, but with little concern for what purpose such research ultimately may be used.

Universities like Harvard still purport to teach the liberal arts, those studies worthy of a free man. Such a curriculum once itself implied an ideal, an end. The liberal arts, indeed, have had as their object to cultivate the “gentleman,” in the sense that the word implies a distinction, a high standard that presumably all, and probably most, can never attain—and not as we often use the term today, to welcome every male individual who passes through the door of a public restroom. A liberal education aspires to make men’s minds liberal, worthy of being free: those who are free from acting according to base motives, such as personal gain, and can practice the virtues for their own sake.

Modern college curricula have no regard for the virtues. The wisdom offered in classrooms, if not, as in the admittedly “applied” sciences, purely instrumental, is then essentially a curiosity, since it has no relationship to the good life. And, as such, graduates will be left uninstructed as to how they ought to use, or how they ought to act with, the knowledge they have gained and the natural intelligence they have sharpened over the last four years.

The lack of a moral ideal in education bodes especially problematic in the case of Harvard students, who, already confident and ambitious, deserve to have their talents and energies directed toward a suitably noble end. Those students, without due guidance, understandably will concern themselves first with gainfully employing their knowledge and skill for either money or power, and only secondarily, if at all, with the responsible and respectable ideal that their university and most in their generation abandoned long ago.

Freudian Slip

From Catholic World News "Off the Record"
By Diogenes

In its transcription of the presidential press conference of April 29, RealClear Politics has President Obama making this statement in the context of a discussion on abortion:

The other thing that I said consistently during the campaign is I would like to reduce the number of unwanted presidencies...

Unwanted presidencies? Yes, we'd like to reduce them, too.

Does Global Warming Cause Muslims to Rape Europeans?

From Moonbattery

Sweden has been suffering from a rape epidemic. Rapists who were born abroad reportedly outnumber rapists born in Sweden four to one. This isn't entirely surprising, considering that Sweden is being colonized out of existence by Muslim hordes exploiting liberal immigration policies. European women have taken to dying their blonde hair black and even wearing head scarves to avoid being attacked by Muslim colonizers, who hold them in total contempt.

Rape has a noble history in Islam. Muhammad himself raped his slaves, which is perfectly acceptable behavior according to the religion that we are allowing to replace Christianity. As Scandinavian blogger Fjordman observes:

If you postulate that many of the Muslims in Europe view themselves as a conquering army and that European women are simply war booty, it all makes perfect sense and is in full accordance with Islamic law.

Despite all this, it would be xenophobic to blame the rape epidemic on Muslims. Actually, the weather is to blame. According to an article in Aftonbladet, warm weather stimulates the hormones, causing rape.

The number of rapes in Sweden has increased fourfold in the last generation. But resist the temptation to associate this with the ongoing Islamic conquest by immigration. A correct person will realize that it's only proof that global warming is real after all, and is deflowering our maidens.

The weather did it.

The RNC's Crazy Man in the Attic

We strongly recommend that members of the Republican National Committee see the 1994 film, The Madness of King George. As we've noted here, here, and here, they have a lunatic on their hands in the person of the current chairman. If they are unwilling to correct the huge mistake they made in January, they might at least get pointers on coping from the Court of George III. It appears they are beginning to work around the crazy man in the attic:

Steele Fights Back Against RNC 'Scheme'

From The Washington Times

By Ralph Z. Hallow

The embattled Republican National Committee chairman angrily returned fire in his fight with current and former officers over control of the GOP's purse strings.

Under attack from conservatives since taking office on Jan. 30, Michael S. Steele on Wednesday blasted a group of members pushing for new checks and balances on the chairman's spending powers, accusing them of a power grab "scheme."

"I have just returned from an overseas trip to learn that the five of you have developed a scheme to transfer the RNC chairman's authority to the treasurer and the executive committee," Mr. Steele wrote in an e-mail he sent to Randy Pullen, the RNC's elected treasurer, and Blake Hall, the committee's general counsel, as well as to three former RNC officers.

In the e-mail, obtained by The Washington Times, Mr. Steele argues that he always has embraced the "transparency, competitive bidding and good governance" that Mr. Pullen and the others said their resolution aims to achieve.

Mr. Pullen and four other veteran members have proposed a resolution that imposes new controls on Mr. Steele's power to award contracts and spend money on outside legal and other services. The group needs signatures from RNC members from 16 states to force the resolution to the floor for a vote by the full party committee at the May 20 special meeting.

"It is of course not lost on me that each of you worked tirelessly down to the last minute in an effort to stop me from becoming chairman," Mr. Steele wrote.

Mr. Pullen, himself a candidate for treasurer, backed no one for national chairman. The party's former general counsel David Norcross, a longtime friend and mentor to Mr. Steele, supported the South Carolina GOP chairman. Since then, Mr. Norcross said Mr. Steele has not responded to telephone calls and e-mails from him.

RNC members reached by The Times said they did not know Mr. Steele had been "overseas." Steele spokesman Trevor Francis said "no comment" when The Times asked on Wednesday where exactly Mr. Steele had been.

In the e-mail, Mr. Steele said the resolution "amounts to nothing short of a completely unprecedented usurpation of the authority of the RNC chairman, and a transfer of the chairman's authority to the executive committee and the treasurer. No RNC chairman has ever had to deal with this, and I certainly have no intention of putting up with it either."

But Mr. Norcross, one of the measure's sponsors, said in an e-mail to some members that the opposite is true. He argues that the financial checks and balances proposed in the resolution were always in play at the RNC and somehow got lost in the 2008 post-presidential nominating convention shuffle.

"Randy's resolution or something very similar has been in place for years," Mr. Norcross wrote. "It has been adopted as part of the 'boilerplate' at the organization meetings immediately after the convention every four years. Inexplicably it was not adopted in Minneapolis."

Mr. Norcross then pointedly noted that the RNC's "elected treasurer is subject to criminal and civil penalties for false reporting to the Federal Election Commission. I don't think we should expect anyone to undertake that kind of exposure without this resolution or something very much like it."

Mr. Pullen said he gave Mr. Steele the measure Thursday and was told he would get a response by Sunday. When the response didn't arrive, Mr. Pullen informed the committee's other 167 members of the effort, igniting a battle with members supportive of Mr. Steele.

Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus knocked the group for trying to "embarrass and neuter the chairman."

The funding fight continues the open challenge to Mr. Steele's authority. Unhappy RNC conservatives secured the signatures needed to force the committee to convene next month's special meeting to vote on a resolution labeling Democrats as "socialists," despite the chairman's reservations about the political wisdom of the move.

Critics said the "socialist" resolution battle was a sign of Mr. Steele's rocky start as RNC chairman and his continuing struggle to assert control of the party's message since his election in January.

First 300,000 Petition Signatures Delivered to Notre Dame Board Members, Fr. Jenkins

Copies Are Being Rushed to Rome, Papal Nuncio, USCCB and ND Bishop John D’Arcy

Today, April 29, 2009, the first 300,000 names of individuals who signed the petition at NotreDameScandal.com — opposing the University of Notre Dame’s decision to honor President Barack Obama at commencement — are being delivered to Notre Dame president Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., the Board of Trustees and the Board of Fellows as they prepare for scheduled meetings on Friday, May 1, at Notre Dame.

As of this morning, more than 344,000 people have signed the petition, but because of the overwhelming numbers it took The Cardinal Newman Society more than 24 hour
s to prepare the data and print more than 64,000 sheets of paper, double sided, which were then bound in notebooks and sent via FedEx to Father Jenkins and individual members of the Notre Dame Board of Trustees and Board of Fellows.

Copies of the petitions are also being rushed by The Cardinal Newman Society, which sponsored the petition, to Archbishop Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski, Prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education; Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the Apostolic Nuncio (Vatican ambassador) to the United States; Francis Cardinal George, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB); Bishop John D’Arcy, of Fort Wayne-South Bend, who presides over Notre Dame; and Bishop Robert McManus, Chairman of the USCCB Education Committee. “

Only the Notre Dame Trustees and Fellows have direct authority over Father Jenkins, so their meetings on Friday are our best hope for an end to this scandal,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society.

“It is critical for all of us to pray that the Trustees and Fellows charged with safeguarding Notre Dame’s Catholic identity will heed the 50 bishops and hundreds of thousands of faithful Catholics urging Notre Dame to withdraw its invitation to President Obama.”

The University of Notre Dame is governed by a 12-member Board of Fellows, including six Holy Cross priests, who are charged with ensuring “that the University maintains its essential character as a Catholic institution of higher learning.” The Fellows delegate most of their governing authority to the 38-member Board of Trustees, comprised mostly of lay people.

The university’s charter states: "The essential character of the University as a Catholic institution of higher learning shall at all times be maintained, it being the stated intention and desire of the present Fellows of the University that the University shall retain in perpetuity its identity as such an institution."

Senator Specter: Please Take John McCain and His Daughters, Meghan and Lindsey, with You!

Huntsman Slammed for Embracing Civil Unions

Governor Jon Huntsman, RINO-Utah, who earlier this year was introduced to South Carolina Republican leaders at a dinner hosted by Attorney General Henry McMaster, has won praise from the leading homosexual advocacy group, Human Rights Campaign, for his support of civil unions. The liberal, Mormon Governor, who is expected to be a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, is a close associate of John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

As the following story from The Hill indicates, Republican organizations in other states are taking a more principled stand when it comes to the ambitions of Governor Jon Huntsman.

From The Hill
By Reid Wilson

Utah Gov. John Huntsman (R), seen by many as a potential top-tier presidential candidate in 2012, has been uninvited from a local Michigan Republican club after announcing his support for civil unions between gay couples.

Huntsman is touring Michigan this week and stopping at several county party events as he slowly raises his national profile. But the Kent County Republican Party this week canceled Huntsman's appearance, with the county party chairwoman saying his appearance would amount to an abandonment of party principles.

Joanne Voorhees, chairwoman of the party in the Grand Rapids-based county, emailed party members to announce the cancellation of the Saturday fundraiser.

“The voters want and expect us to stand on principle and return to our roots,” Voorhees wrote in an email. “Unfortunately, by holding an event with Gov. Huntsman, we would be doing the exact opposite.”

The move won praise from the Campaign for Michigan Families, one of the main groups behind Michigan's 2004 passage of a ban on same-sex marriages. Campaign chairman Gary Glenn called on Kalamazoo and Oakland County Republican Parties to cancel their own planned events with the two-term Utah governor.

In place of the canceled Kent County fundraiser, Huntsman will be hosted by Dick DeVos, the GOP gubernatorial nominee in 2006 and a major Republican fundraiser in the state, and wife Betsy DeVos for a fundraiser in Grand Rapids that benefits the state party.

Huntsman will also stop by the Muskegon County GOP.

Huntsman won praise in February from the Human Rights Campaign, one of the leading gay rights organizations in the country, when he announced he would back civil unions as contractual agreements between what he called non-traditional couples.

Huntsman has emerged as a leading voice urging national Republicans to moderate their positions and has signaled that, were he to run for president, he would do so as a centrist with business credentials. He has said that he doesn't plan to run for president, though he has well-known consultants guiding him as he visits several states crucial to winning the GOP primary.

Earlier this year, Huntsman visited several state party events in South Carolina, site of the first-in-the-South primary. He has also stopped in North Carolina and will give a speech at a conference later this week in Chicago.

In South Carolina, Huntsman met a number of party chairmen and activists with Attorney General Henry McMaster (R) at his side. In Michigan, political consultant John Yob has been setting up meetings for Huntsman around the state.

Prominent Gay British Politician Jokes about Killing Miss California for Her Opposition to Same-Sex "Marriage"

From LifeSiteNews
By John-Henry Westen and Hilary White

Alan Duncan, the UK's first openly-homosexual Conservative politician and the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons is rebuffing criticism for saying on a comedy show that he would kill Miss California, Carrie Prejean, for her remarks against homosexual "marriage." Prejean made the remarks during the recent Miss American beauty pageant. (See coverage: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/apr/09042103.html)

Mr. Duncan, on the BBC comedy news show "Have I Got News For You" on Friday, described Prejean as a "silly b**ch." He added, "If you read that Miss California has been murdered, you will know it was me, won't you?"

Other panellists on the comedy show expressed shock despite their support for same-sex "marriage." Katy Brand said, "That's a hell of a statement to be making on camera there, Alan." Paul Merton said, "For someone planning to be Home Secretary."

The Metropolitan Police have received a complaint from George Hargreaves, an outspokenly pro-family evangelical minister and the leader of the small political party, the Christian Party, whose members believe that homosexual activity is sinful.

Yesterday Hargreaves said, "Mr Duncan has crossed the line. A senior politician suggesting, even as a joke, that it is okay that Miss Prejean should be murdered for her evangelical Christian views is totally unacceptable.

"How can we stop gun and knife crime when the man who thinks he will be the next Home Secretary makes death threats?"

In later comments, Duncan continued to treat the incident as a joke. "Of course it was in jest. It is a comedy show after all. I'm sure Miss Prejean's very beautiful and that if we were to meet we would love each other. I have no plans to kill her. I'll send her a box of chocolates - unpoisoned," he told media.

A spokesman for the BBC said, "Alan Duncan's comment was not meant to be taken seriously and it did not go unchallenged. Its absurdity and unacceptability was [sic] highlighted by the other panellists."

George Pitcher, religion editor of the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph, wrote on Monday that the larger issue is that a senior Tory politician has said that he is opposed to the current legal definition of marriage in Britain.

"A union between a man and a woman. In current civil and ecclesiastical law that is how it is," he wrote. "So, it would seem that Mr. Duncan would want to put same-sex civil partnerships on the same civil and ecclesiastical legal footing as marriage. Is that Conservative Party policy and will Mr Duncan push for it if he becomes Home Secretary?"

Duncan, who is in a legal civil partnership with James Dunseath, is described as a "moderniser" in the Tory party and economically and socially libertarian in his political views. When Duncan announced in March 2008 that he would be entering into a homosexual civil partnership, Tory party leader David Cameron said, "I am absolutely delighted for Alan and James and wish them all the very best."

During the Miss America pageant, aired live on NBC, homosexual activist and celebrity gossip Perez Hilton, one of 13 telecast judges, asked Miss California, Carrie Prejean: "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?"

Prejean answered, "I think it's great Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, in my country, in my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody there, but that's how I was raised and that's how I think it should be - between a man and a woman."

Hilton later lambasted Prejean for her answer on his popular blog. He called her answer "the worst answer in pageant history." "She lost, not because she doesn't believe in gay marriage, she lost because she's a dumb b*tch," he said.

"If that girl would have won Miss USA, California, I would have gone up on stage, I sh*t you not, ... snatched that tiara off her head, and run out the door," said Hilton.

The Deadly Flu Pandemic of 1918

A World Health Organization official is warning that even if the Swine Flu epidemic dies out in coming weeks, it could rebound with far more deadly force in the Fall. According to The Telegraph:
"more than 150 deaths are thought to be related to swine flu, although only seven have been confirmed as being caused by the virus. The United States has announced 44 mild infections, while three people have the virus in New Zealand and six in Canada. There have been two confirmed cases in Spain and one in Israel, and fiften other countries have said they are investigating possible infections. Six people were being tested in Ireland."
The worst flu pandemic the world has ever known has been largely forgotten, but it killed more Americans than all the wars of the twentieth century combined. It is thought to have killed at least a half-million Americans and 30 million worldwide. The following documentary chronicles that deadly pandemic of 1918.

Ex-Graham Aide Fined for Theft

From The Hill
By Reid Wilson

A former political aide to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will pay a civil penalty after embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from Graham's Senate campaign, the Federal Election Commission announced Monday.

Mary Jennifer Adams, who was arrested in December 2007 for embezzling $280,000 from Graham's re-election campaign, will pay $2,500 to the FEC. She has also agreed not to work on a federal campaign in any capacity related to the campaign's finances.

Barack's in the Basement

Obama is less popular than Nixon and Carter

Editorial from The Washington Times

President Obama's media cheerleaders are hailing how loved he is. But at the 100-day mark of his presidency, Mr. Obama is the second-least-popular president in 40 years.

According to Gallup's April survey, Americans have a lower approval of Mr. Obama at this point than all but one president since Gallup began tracking this in 1969. The only new president less popular was Bill Clinton, who got off to a notoriously bad start after trying to force homosexuals on the military and a federal raid in Waco, Texas, that killed 86. Mr. Obama's current approval rating of 56 percent is only one tick higher than the 55-percent approval Mr. Clinton had during those crises.

Raging Radical Homosexuals and Their Hatred of the Truth

Real Clear Religion sums it up clearly and succinctly, plus a clip from The Daily Mail and a quote from Saint Peter Damian:

The radical sodomite movement will indeed bring about a persecution of the Church. The vitriol seething from those who are enslaved in the deadly sin of sodomy provides a glimpse into the future when they will one day line up and murder those who adhere to the true Faith. They are literally a possession of the devil and have been driven to an insane and fanatical revulsion of the truth. Here is just another example...
From Daily Mail:

'What makes you think it's natural to be heterosexual?': Christian teacher suspended over gay rights promotion row---
A senior teacher has been suspended from his £50,000-a-year job after he complained that a training day for staff was used to promote gay rights.

Kwabena Peat, 54, was one of several Christian staff who walked out of the compulsory session at a North London school after an invited speaker questioned why people thought heterosexuality was natural.

The presentation was given by Sue Sanders, a co-founder of the Schools Out organisation which campaigns for gay equality in education.

According to Mr Peat, Ms Sanders, herself a lesbian, said that staff who did not accept that being gay was normal had ‘issues’ they had to deal with.

Mr Peat, a history teacher who is also a head of year, said he was upset that people who disagreed on religious grounds had no chance to respond.

He wrote privately to the three staff members who organised the session, complaining about Ms Sanders’ ‘aggressive’ presentation. In his letter, he cited the Bible and warned that practising homosexuals risked God’s ‘wrath’.

But the staff complained to the school’s principal that they felt ‘harassed and intimidated’ by the letter and, after an investigation, Mr Peat was placed on paid leave. He is now being supported by the Christian Legal Centre.

‘I am very disappointed, although not shocked,’ the married father of three said last night. ‘I am the one who has been harassed and intimidated – for expressing my religious views.’..."

"Ms Sanders, 62, founded the voluntary organisation Schools Out in 1974. However, the £850 training session was organised by Chrysalis, a training team that specialises in diversity issues.

Mr Peat said he had expected her merely to provide information to help teachers handle homophobic bullying, but she had gone much further.

‘She started promoting homosexual lifestyles and suggesting those who had objections should sort out their prejudices. She said, “What makes you all think that to be heterosexual is natural?” It was at that point I walked out.’..."

"Ms Sanders said her training sessions were designed to ‘raise awareness’."

How about some awareness for Ms Sanders?...

According to St Peter Damian, the sin of homosexuality "surpasses the enormity of all others," because:
"Without fail, it brings death to the body and destruction to the soul. It pollutes the flesh, extinguishes the light of the mind, expels the Holy Spirit from the temple of the human heart, and gives entrance to the devil, the stimulator of lust. It leads to error, totally removes truth from the deluded mind ... It opens up hell and closes the gates of paradise ... It is this vice that violates temperance, slays modesty, strangles chastity, and slaughters virginity ... It defiles all things, sullies all things, pollutes all things ... This vice excludes a man from the assembled choir of the Church ... it separates the soul from God to associate it with demons. This utterly diseased queen of Sodom renders him who obeys the laws of her tyranny infamous to men and odious to God... She strips her knights of the armor of virtue, exposing them to be pierced by the spears of every vice ... She humiliates her slave in the church and condemns him in court; she defiles him in secret and dishonors him in public; she gnaws at his conscience like a worm and consumes his flesh like fire. ... this unfortunate man (he) is deprived of all moral sense, his memory fails, and the mind's vision is darkened. Unmindful of God, he also forgets his own identity. This disease erodes the foundation of faith, saps the vitality of hope, dissolves the bond of love. It makes way with justice, demolishes fortitude, removes temperance, and blunts the edge of prudence. Shall I say more?"

Glendon Declines Commencement Honor From Notre Dame

From Catholic World News

Mary Ann Glendon has announced that she will not accept the Laetare Medal-- the highest honor conferred by the University of Notre Dame-- at this year's commencement exercises.

Glendon-- the Harvard Law professor who recently stepped down from her post as US ambassador to the Holy See-- has indicated that she decided to decline the Laetare Medal because of her concerns about the commencement address that will be delivered by President Barack Obama. In an April 27 letter to Father John Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame, she wrote that a prospect "that once seemed so delightful has been complicated" by the Obama appearance and by Notre Dame's response to criticism from the American bishops.

In her letter Glendon expressed dismay that Notre Dame chose to honor the President despite his clear public stand against Catholic principles on key moral issues. She also voiced her discomfort with the university's suggestion that her own speech at the commencement exercises might counterbalance the Obama appearance. A commencement celebration, she said, "is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised" by Notre Dame's decision to invite Obama in defiance of clear guidance from the US bishops.

The full text of Glendon's letter follows:

Dear Father Jenkins,

When you informed me in December 2008 that I had been selected to receive Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal, I was profoundly moved. I treasure the memory of receiving an honorary degree from Notre Dame in 1996, and I have always felt honored that the commencement speech I gave that year was included in the anthology of Notre Dame’s most memorable commencement speeches. So I immediately began working on an acceptance speech that I hoped would be worthy of the occasion, of the honor of the medal, and of your students and faculty.

Last month, when you called to tell me that the commencement speech was to be given by President Obama, I mentioned to you that I would have to rewrite my speech. Over the ensuing weeks, the task that once seemed so delightful has been complicated by a number of factors.

First, as a longtime consultant to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, I could not help but be dismayed by the news that Notre Dame also planned to award the president an honorary degree. This, as you must know, was in disregard of the U.S. bishops’ express request of 2004 that Catholic institutions “should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles” and that such persons “should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” That request, which in no way seeks to control or interfere with an institution’s freedom to invite and engage in serious debate with whomever it wishes, seems to me so reasonable that I am at a loss to understand why a Catholic university should disrespect it.

Then I learned that “talking points” issued by Notre Dame in response to widespread criticism of its decision included two statements implying that my acceptance speech would somehow balance the event:

• “President Obama won’t be doing all the talking. Mary Ann Glendon, the former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, will be speaking as the recipient of the Laetare Medal.”

• “We think having the president come to Notre Dame, see our graduates, meet our leaders, and hear a talk from Mary Ann Glendon is a good thing for the president and for the causes we care about.”

A commencement, however, is supposed to be a joyous day for the graduates and their families. It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision—in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops—to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.

Finally, with recent news reports that other Catholic schools are similarly choosing to disregard the bishops’ guidelines, I am concerned that Notre Dame’s example could have an unfortunate ripple effect.

It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony.

In order to avoid the inevitable speculation about the reasons for my decision, I will release this letter to the press, but I do not plan to make any further comment on the matter at this time.

Yours Very Truly,

Mary Ann Glendon

Post-Christian? Not Even Close

A high-profile ‘religious landscape’ survey is said to show that America is rapidly losing its faith in Christianity. One problem: It’s not so.

From USA Today
Opinion
By Stephen Prothero

In the endless debate over whether the United States is a Christian nation, the "ayes" no longer seem to have it.

The "ayes" might have the 1892 Supreme Court ruling describing the United States as a "Christian nation," but the "nays" have the Treaty of Tripoli of 1797, which affirmed that "the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."

Now comes President Obama, who in January in his inaugural address spoke of this country as "a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers." On April 6 in Turkey, Obama added that the United States "does not consider itself a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation" but "a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

Drunken Nation: Russia’s Depopulation Bomb

From Georgian Daily
By Nicholas Eberstadt

A specter is haunting Russia today. It is not the specter of Communism—that ghost has been chained in the attic of the past—but rather of depopulation—a relentless, unremitting, and perhaps unstoppable depopulation. The mass deaths associated with the Communist era may be history, but another sort of mass death may have only just begun, as Russians practice what amounts to an ethnic self-cleansing.

Since 1992, Russia’s human numbers have been progressively dwindling. This slow motion process now taking place in the country carries with it grim and potentially disastrous implications that threaten to recast the contours of life and society in Russia, to diminish the prospects for Russian economic development, and to affe
ct Russia’s potential influence on the world stage in the years ahead.

Russia has faced this problem at other times during the last century. The first bout of d
epopulation lasted from 1917 to 1923, and was caused by the upheavals that transformed the Russian Empire into the Soviet Union. The next drop took place between 1933 and 1934, when the country’s population fell by nearly 2 million—or almost 2 percent—as a result of Stalin’s war against the “kulaks” in his forced collectivization of Soviet agriculture. And then, between 1941 and 1946, Russia’s population plummeted by more than 13 million through the cataclysms and catastrophes of World War II.

Barack Obama and the CIA: Why Does President Pantywaist Hate America So Badly?

From The Telegraph
By Gerald Warner

If al-Qaeda, the Taliban and the rest of the Looney Tunes brigade want to kick America to death, they had better move in quickly and grab a piece of the action before Barack Obama finishes the job himself. Never in the history of the United States has a president worked so actively against the interests of his own people - not even Jimmy Carter.

Obama's problem is that he does not know who the enemy is. To him, the enemy does not squat in caves in Waziristan, clutching automatic weapons and reciting the more militant verses from the Koran: instead, it sits around at tea parties in Kentucky quoting from the US Constitution. Obama is not at war with terrorists, but with his Republican fellow citizens. He has never abandoned the campaign trail.

That is why he opened Pandora's Box by publishing the Justice Department's legal opinions on waterboarding and other hardline interrogation techniques. He cynically subordinated the national interest to his partisan desire to embarrass the Republicans. Then he had to rush to Langley, Virginia to try to reassure a demoralised CIA that had just discovered the President of the United States was an even more formidable foe than al-Qaeda.

"Don't be discouraged by what's happened the last few weeks," he told intelligence officers. Is he kidding? Thanks to him, al-Qaeda knows the private interrogation techniques available to the US intelligence agencies and can train its operatives to withstand them - or would do so, if they had not already been outlawed.

So, next time a senior al-Qaeda hood is captured, all the CIA can do is ask him nicely if he would care to reveal when a major population centre is due to be hit by a terror spectacular, or which American city is about to be irradiated by a dirty bomb. Your view of this situation will be dictated by one simple criterion: whether or not you watched the people jumping from the twin towers.

Obama promised his CIA audience that nobody would be prosecuted for past actions. That has already been contradicted by leftist groups with a revanchist ambition to put Republicans, headed if possible by Condoleezza Rice, in the dock. Talk about playing party politics with national security. Martin Scheinin, the United Nations special investigator for human rights, claims that senior figures, including former vice president Dick Cheney, could face prosecution overseas. Ponder that - once you have got over the difficulty of locating the United Nations and human rights within the same dimension.

President Pantywaist Obama should have thought twice before sitting down to play poker with Dick Cheney. The former vice president believes documents have been selectively published and that releasing more will prove how effective the interrogation techniques were. Under Dubya's administration, there was no further atrocity on American soil after 9/11.

President Pantywaist's recent world tour, cosying up to all the bad guys, excited the ambitions of America's enemies. Here, they realised, is a sucker they can really take to the cleaners. His only enemies are fellow Americans. Which prompts the question: why does President Pantywaist hate America so badly?

Pandemic Feared As Swine Flu Spreads

It was just days ago that Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, told us that illegal immigration is not a crime, even though the statute says that it is. As with most liberals, national survival doesn't mean much to the cabinet member charged with ensuring it. But personal survival is quite another matter for her sort. Now that foreign invaders threaten the lives of her family, friends and neighbors back in Arizona, securing the national borders may yet become as high a government priority as no smoking bans, seat belt enforcement, and safe sex.

Scientists search for answers in new strain

From The Washington Times
By Associated Press

A new swine flu strain that has killed as many as 81 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico has "pandemic potential," the World Health Organization chief said Saturday, and it may be too late to contain the sudden outbreak.

Mexico's president assumed new powers Saturday to isolate people infected with a deadly swine flu strain as authorities struggled to contain the outbreak.

Free Speech Concerns Ignored as "Hate Crimes" Bill Passes Fed. Judiciary Committee

From LifeSiteNews
By Kathleen Gilbert

A divided House Judiciary Committee yesterday voted to send a federal "hate crimes" bill to the House, after free speech advocates failed to secure protection for pastors who might preach biblically-based injunctions against homosexual activity.

In a motion almost completely ignored by the mainstream media, the Judiciary Committee voted 15-12 to allow the hotly contested H.R. 1913, known as the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Act of 2009, to go forward.

The measure would grant the federal government a new authority to prosecute any violent crime anywhere in the country that is perceived to be "motivated by prejudice" against a number of protected characteristics, including "sexual orientation" and "gender identity."

Christian leaders are particularly concerned that attempts to secure the right to speak against the homosexual lifestyle and its normalization have failed. Among many rejected proposals for the bill was one offered by Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, which would have included a clause ensuring ministers could not be prosecuted for abetting a "hate crime" because they preached the Christian perspective on homosexuality.

An Anthem for the TEA Party Revolution by Lloyd Marcus

The great beauty of the TEA party movement is that they allow concerned, patriotic Americans the opportunity to realize they are not alone, that countless other ordinary Americans are also committed to taking America back from those intent on changing and destroying her. May that movement grow until a new revolution has fully restored the republic under its Constitution. Here's a song that should become the movement's anthem.

OBAMA’S FIRST 100 DAYS

The Biggest Spending Spree in American History

From the Republican Study Committee

As President Barack Obama approaches his 100th day in office, we have just witnessed the most debt-riddled first 100 days of an administration in American history. Obama has vaulted far past the debt numbers accumulated by his two predecessors in their first 100 days (in fact past their entire first years). In just 100 days, Obama has left future generations 564 billion dollars in new debt. Unfortunately for taxpayers, this is only a preview of what is to come.

As American taxpayers continue to hand over their money to pay for President Obama’s reckless spending agenda, it is appropriate to compare his first 100 days to those of previous administrations. Below, find the debt accumulated in President Obama’s first 100 days compared to those of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Even given the size and scope of President Obama’s reckless spending agenda, the figures below are sure to surprise. (Source: Bureau of Public Debt)

Obama even blows away the competition when comparing his first 100 days to his predecessors’ first full YEAR.

Clinton’s 1st YEAR

Bush’s 1st YEAR

Obama’s 1st 100 DAYS

$312 Billion

$194 Billion

Egyptian-American Muslim to Advise the Kenyan Muslim on Muslim Affairs

The Los Angeles Times reports that Dalia Mogahed, a veiled Egyptian American, will advise President Obama on Muslim affairs.

Can't tell you how often we have thought that what Jihad in America needs is more of that unique Egyptian perspective. We're sure Ms. Mogahed will be very helpful to the Kenyan Muslim who appointed her.

Obama's Catholic "Plan"

Britain's Naked Public Square

From First Things
By Peter C. Glover

A series of high-profile legal battles and workplace rulings during the past several months has kept Christianity, or its lack, in the headlines in Great Britain. Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury, caused outrage last year when he suggested that Shari’a law might replace British common law in some cases. But the piecemeal persecution of Christians in Britain is even more damaging—and it has now become routine.

The growing crime rate and out-of-control teenage pregnancies (the highest percentage in Europe and rising) are among the social problems that have created national anxiety. But what has caused the recent headlines are the major legal battles and workplace problems that reveal the existence of anti-Christian bias in Britain—a bias manifested by censorship in public debate and a media antagonistic to all things Christian. Is it too much to think that the social problems and the bias are related? By making Christian practice difficult, if not outright illegal in public life, the British courts and public authorities have contributed to an increasing awareness that a vacuum exists where the nation’s Judeo-Christian spine used to be.

Perez Hilton and In-Your-Face ‘Queer’ Activists: the Obnoxious Spoiled Brats of our Culture

Carrie Prejean sought to please God rather than politically-correct man; WARNING: GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS

From Americans for Truth About Homosexuality
By Peter LaBarbera

OK, where do we start with the Perez Hilton-Carrie Prejean Miss USA controversy? Earlier today I was a guest on the Bob Dutko Show on WMUZ in Detroit, and observed that Hilton epitomizes the spoiled-brat aspect of “queer” activism. It’s bad enough that this obnoxious and rude “gay celebrity blogger” calls Miss California a “dumb bitch,” and then stands behind his ugly remark after initially apologizing for it. I want to know why this nasty fellow is then treated so deferentially by the media — first by this MSNBC anchor Norah O’Donnell and then NBC’s Matt Lauer? Are the liberal media — like those irresponsible parents who let themselves be manipulated by their spoiled children — now so indulgent toward homosexuals that they can’t even call out an angry activist whose vicious and juvenile conduct is obvious to most everyone else? Would NBC have accorded similar respect to a right-wing blogger who blasted a homosexual contestant as a “dumb fag”? Of course not (but they would have made an example of him as a hateful bigot, which is precisely what Mr. Hilton is). Watch this YouTube of this morning’s NBC Today Show, followed by more commentary after the jump:

Chris Simcox for the United States Senate!

In the midst of a political nightmare and national despair, there is great news from Arizona today. Chris Simcox, a successful businessman, educator, and patriot founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has announced that he will challenge the second worst Republican Senator, John McCain, for the Republican Senate nomination.

We strongly endorse Chris Simcox and hope that anyone who can, will sign up on his website to help. His election will send a powerful message to the Republican Party, and will be a great step toward saving our republic, securing our national borders, defending national sovereignty, and restoring a government under the Constitution, guided by the unchanging laws of God.

FBI Spied on TEA Party Americans

Even as average Americans were planning to get out in towns and cities to demonstrate against Big Government and Big Taxes, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) surveillance was being unleashed upon them. In fact, unsuspecting Tax Day TEA Party participants were being closely watched during the demonstration planning stages in a covert operation that began on or about March 23, 2009.

If you were one of the estimated 750,000 Americans who attended one of about 600 TEA parties last week, you might have seen media cameras covering the event. Media cameras, however, were not the only cameras taking video at these events, something that has at least one current FBI agent concerned over the future of America. According to this agent - the same agent who provided the Northeast Intelligence Network (NEIN) exclusively the unreleased photographs of the 11 missing Egyptian students who were the subject of a FBI BOLO in August 2006–placed his concerns for true patriots of the U.S. over his own career when he confided that covert surveillance was “planned and performed” at each of the TEA parties that took place last Tuesday.

“Listen to what I am saying,” stated the source during an interview with Doug Hagmann, founder (NEIN). “The Department of Homeland Security Intelligence Assessment that is receiving so much attention is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, and the true patriotic citizens of this country are on the Titanic. This is what bothers me. But it goes far beyond that assessment. There have been very significant changes made over the last few years that redirect the focus and assets of the intelligence community internally. These changes have greatly accelerated under this administration, and the threats have been redefined to include those who used to be patriots. It’s not only chilling but absolutely insulting to God-fearing Americans.”

According to this unimpeachable source, a single-page confidential directive issued by the FBI headquarters in Washington, DC (FBIHQ) was sent to each of the 56 field offices located across the United States on or about March 23, 2009, instructing the Special Agents in Charge (SACs) of those offices to verify the date, time and location of each TEA Party within their region and supply that information to FBI headquarters in Washington. The source stated this correspondence termed the TEA parties “political demonstrations,” and added that the dissemination of the directive was very tightly controlled. “Not all agents were privy to this correspondence,” stated the source, who compared the dissemination to an older “Do Not File” classification.

In addition to obtaining or confirming the location and time of each “demonstration,” each field office was instructed to obtain or confirm the identity of the individual(s) involved in the actual planning and coordination of the event in each specific region, and include the local or regional Internet web site address

, if any. The information collected by region was then reportedly sent to FBI Headquarters.

The source alleges that a second directive was issued on or about April 6, 2009 that reportedly instructed each SAC to coordinate and conduct, either at the field office level and/or with the appropriate resident agency, covert video surveillance and data collection of the participants of the TEA parties. Surveillance was to be performed from “discreet fixed or mobile positions” and was to be performed “independently and outside of the purview of local law enforcement.”

Although the level of detail collected from each operation is unclear, the information was reportedly submitted to Washington, where, “at the level of the National Security Branch (NSB), this information was to “include the office of the Directorate of Intelligence (DI), and integrated with a restricted access database, one that reportedly is accessible to only two agencies” [of the 14 agencies that comprise the U.S. intelligence community, according to the source.

“The implications to the citizens of the U.S. are ominous. It seems that there is a hostile political agenda coming from Washington that characterizes the supporters of our constitutional freedoms as threats to our domestic security, which is totally absurd. The redirection, the refocusing of domestic threats from al Qaeda cells to ‘flag waving right-wingers’ is something that has gone from a murmur a few years ago to a roar today.”

Training government-issued cameras on ordinary citizens, many of whom brought their children to an estimated 600 Tax Day TEA Parties is a page torn out of George Orwell’s 1984 and makes the term “God Bless America” more meaningful than ever.

Napolitano: Illegal Immigration NOT a Crime?

From The Heritage Foundation
By Jena McNeill

On Sunday, April 19, 2009, Secretary Napolitano went on CNN’s “State of the Union” and proclaimed that crossing the border illegally is not a crime. This statement left a lot of folks scratching their heads given that U.S. law—the law Napolitano is sworn to uphold—says quite the opposite. Section 8, Title 1325 of the U.S. code clearly states that those who enter the U.S. illegally are committing a crime.

This ‘interpretation’ of the law by Secretary Napolitano seems to be the latest in an effort by the Obama Administration to scale back interior immigration enforcement efforts in the United States. As recently as March 28th, Napolitano made the decision to delay a series of immigration raids and other workplace actions aimed at finding illegal workers. At the same time, both President Obama and Secretary Napolitano have announced new initiatives intending to send the message that they take the issues at the southern border seriously. But the Administration cannot fight cartels while ignoring illegal immigration—people smuggling is part of the problem, not a separate issue. Legalization will only make matters worse. Granting the people here illegally asylum will only encourage more illegal border crossing. Likewise, failing to enforce workplace and immigration laws will only encourage more to ignore the law.

The fight has to go beyond the border. Just adding inspections on people heading south is not going to work. Homeland Security will inconvenience everyone but the smugglers who don’t care if some of their loads get caught and will seek alternative routes. On the U.S. side, there has to be a robust integrated response of federal, state, and local law enforcement at the regional level (meshing with is going on in California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico) that targets the cartel and transnational gang networks. At the local level, the U.S. needs more community policing that targets criminal elements in the border community. That means more support and assistance for border county sheriff departments.

Secretary Napolitano’s job is to follow and enforce the law—not to use her authority to undermine it.

Senator's Husband Cashes in on Crisis

Feinstein sought $25 billion for agency that awarded contract to spouse

From
The Washington Times
By Chuck Neubauer

On the day the new Congress convened this year, Sen. Dianne Feinstein introduced legislation to route $25 billion in taxpayer money to a government agency that had just awarded her husband's real estate firm a lucrative contract to sell foreclosed properties at compensation rates higher than the industry norms.

Mrs. Feinstein's intervention on behalf of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was unusual: the California Democrat isn't a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs with jurisdiction over FDIC; and the agency is supposed to operate from money it raises from bank-paid insurance payments - not direct federal dollars.

"Fr. Jenkins Will Probably Lose His Job": Nine More Bishops Make 42 against ND Scandal

From LifeSiteNews
By Kathleen Gilbert

Nine more bishops have publicly acknowledged their disapproval of the University of Notre Dame's invitation to President Obama to speak and receive an honorary law degree at the school's commencement exercises May 17.

Bishop Paul Coakley of the diocese of Salina, KS, told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) today that he has written a personal letter to Father Jenkins expressing his "deep disappointment" at the invitation.

Citing his grave concern over the President's support for anti-life policies, Bishop Coakley told LSN that he reminded University president Fr. John Jenkins of the USCCB directive that forbids Catholic schools from honoring those whose positions contradict the teachings of the Church.

"The University's invitation undermines the Catholic identity and mission of the institution," said Coakley.

When LSN requested comment on the Obama invitation from Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, OR, the bishop responded simply: "This is just one more sign of the failure of Catholic Institutions to stand up for and support a higher ethical standard."

The Orlando Diocese, where Thomas G. Wenski is bishop, has announced a Mass of reparation for "the many shortcomings and transgressions committed against the dignity and sacredness of human life in our world," specifically for Notre Dame's decision to honor pro-abortion President Obama at commencement. The Mass is taking place at the Cathedral of St. James on May 3, 2009.

In a column on the Orlando Diocese website, Bishop Wenski writes, "Notre-Dame (at least in its Administration and Board) has forgotten what it means to be Catholic."

"Last year, in Washington, D.C., Pope Benedict XVI addressed Catholic educators, including university presidents," wrote the bishop. "He said 'to justify positions that contradict the faith and teaching of the Church would obstruct or even betray the university's identity and mission.'

"Father Jenkins, Notre-Dame's president, must have nodded off during the Pope's speech," he concluded.

Archdiocese of Cincinnati spokesman Dan Andriacco has confirmed to CNS that Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk "supports the strong comments of Bishop D'Arcy of South Bend, in whose diocese Notre Dame is located." Archbishop D'Arcy, who is boycotting Notre Dame's commencement, has said that Notre Dame must ask itself whether by this decision it has chosen prestige over truth.

Mr. Andriacco also said the archbishop stands by the editorial 'Prestige over Truth', appearing in The Catholic Telegraph, on April 3, which is critical of Notre Dame's decision to honor Obama.

On Saturday, Bishop Robert Finn of the diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Mo., addressed the scandal in the course of his keynote address for the 2009 Gospel of Life Convention at St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

"It doesn't take another Bishops' Conference statement to know this is wrong: scandalous, discouraging and confusing to many Catholics," said Finn of the Obama invitation. "God knows what all motivates such a decision.

"I suspect that, since Notre Dame will need a scapegoat for this debacle, and Fr. Jenkins will probably lose his job, at this point perhaps he ought to determine to lose it for doing something right instead of something wrong."

Finn suggested that Jenkins disinvite the President, and instead give the honorary degree to Notre Dame's Bishop John D'Arcy, "who has supported and tried to guide the University, despite their too frequent waywardness, faithfully for 25 years."

In a column in the April 17 issue of the Catholic Times, Bishop George Lucas of Springfield, Ill., said that he was prompted to address the scandal after individuals expressed to him their disturbance at the invitation. "I am disturbed, too, at this decision by Notre Dame to sow confusion where there is clarity in Catholic teaching on the sanctity of human life and the evil of abortion," wrote the bishop.

"For some this may be one political issue among many," the bishop continued. "For Catholics it is a matter of worshiping God by the proclamation of the truth. Many students and faculty at Notre Dame know this. The university's administration thinks it knows better.

"It is hard to imagine the university honoring someone, no matter his office, who had consistently spoken against the value of football," wrote Bishop Lucas. "We are not being unreasonable when we expect the value of human life to be a central focus of a Catholic university."

Bishop Leonard Blair recently stated on Toledo's diocesan website that, while dialogue with politicians on the protection of innocent life remains a "priority at every level" for the Catholic Church, the University's decision to honor Obama was not justified.

Paraphrasing the U.S. Bishops Conference 2004 directive, Blair said: "It is not appropriate for Catholic institutions to give awards, honors or platforms to those who promote an abortion agenda. Doing so suggests that Catholics are not really serious about what the Church teaches regarding grave and immoral offenses against the life of the unborn."

Blair called for Catholics to respect the office of the President, and pray for Mr. Obama's conversion, but added: "An invitation to speak and an honorary doctorate from a Catholic University go beyond the bounds of respect, and can only be a source of dismay."

On Friday, Bishop Gerald Gettelfinger of the Evansville, Ind. diocese said that President Obama "has pandered himself to the pro-choice movement," and thus by inviting him Notre Dame and its president "are by affinity also pandering to the pro-choice movement." The bishop agreed with Bishop D'Arcy, who criticized the school for apparently having "chosen prestige over truth."

The Evansville bishop called it ironic that Obama would be given an honorary law degree, as he said, "Clearly that degree will not include the moral law."

"If so, then the honor is shallow - indeed empty - as God is the source from which all law is derived," he continued.

"God is truth. God is the author and guardian of all human life. God does not allow for selective obedience. Do Father Jenkins and the Board of Trustees by their decision see any disconnect of themselves from the Infinite Truth?"

In a preview of his letter to Fr. Jenkins given to the Daily Journal, Bishop Joseph Latino of Jackson, Miss., wrote that he feels the university has sacrificed the church's teaching concerning the sacredness of life for the distinction of having the nation's first African-American president speak at its commencement.

The Notre Dame alumni watchdog group Project Sycamore is circulating a petition against the invitation which states in part: "The ineradicable facts that will stamp this occasion are the University's decision to inscribe in the University roll of honorees the name of the most pro-abortion President in the nation's history and its choice of him as the person to speak to the 2009 graduates about the values they should hold dear." (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/oppose_obama/) (For more information on Project Sycamore, go to: http://www.sycamoretrust.org./)

Another petition, circulated by the Cardinal Newman Society, has been signed by over 320,000 individuals. (See: www.notredamescandal.com)

The Female 'Schindler'

Sixty-four years later, the Holocaust still disgorges astonishing stories of treachery and man’s capacity for evil. We especially need these stories now, as there are ever fewer survivors left, eyewitness accounts yielding to the historians’ more detached version of events. For successive generations to grasp the enormity of the mass murder of millions in the heart of Europe, we need to hear the survivors’ memories. This Sunday, with The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler, CBS presents such a story.

Watch the Trailer of The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler

It's a deeply moving drama based on the little-known true story of Sendler, who is credited with rescuing 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. We are accustomed to books and films about violent Polish anti-Semitism, but The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler portrays a local Catholic who risked her life to save Jewish children.

Mr. President, You Need to Apologize to Mexico

Do we need more proof that an apology is needed? Clearly Mexicans at California's Montebello High School are offended by the fact that the United States, in its arrogant nationalism, insists on having borders, and allows some racist Americans to even suggest that those borders should be secured. To top it all off, we fly the symbol of all this nationalist racism atop government buildings and in front of private homes -- flags that can be seen by Mexican colonizers in our country.

Mr. President, you need to fly to Mexico City and apologize like you did all over Europe and South America for all the many sins of this country's past, letting our Mexican friends know that "Mi casa es su casa."

Sunlit Uplands Reader Calls for Fairness in Pepsi Giving

We posted a story recently about PepsiCo stockholders who are critical of Pepsi's giving $1,000,000 in support of major sodomite advocacy organizations. But a Sunlit Uplands reader calls our attention to judgmental and discriminatory attitudes in Pepsi's giving. Surely, the SC sodomite bloggers will want to address this prejudice:

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "PepsiCo Opposes Resolution Regarding Donations to ...":

I demand fairness and equality for those men born with a natural sexual orientation of attraction to pre-adolescent boys.

As the North American Man-Boy Love Association explains:

"Man/boy love is exceptional only for the degree to which it is still misunderstood in cultures derived from Northwestern Europe. Most man/boy relationships are based on mutual respect and affection, and strongly desired by both partners. Such relationships do not harm anyone, and often entail many benefits for both man and boy. Boy-lovers and boys alike respond to the needs of those they love — needs for affection, understanding, and freedom. Who we are is perhaps best understood from Dr. John Money’s account of two boys, who speak about how they view their adult lovers: Andy – 'Just as normal as anybody else. He is like a second father to me.' Burt – 'He’s neat; and he’s nice, and gives me more respect than anyone ever has ... he treats me like an adult, not like my parents treat me. To me, he’s my best friend.'"

NAMBLA further explains on its website:

"The issue of love between men and boys has intersected the gay movement since the late nineteenth century, with the rise of the first gay rights movement in Germany. In the United States, as the gay movement has retreated from its vision of sexual liberation, in favor of integration and assimilation into existing social and political structures, it has increasingly sought to marginalize even demonize cross-generational love. Pederasty - that is, love between a man and a youth of 12 to 18 years of age - say middle-class homosexuals, lesbians, and feminists, has nothing to do with gay liberation. Some go so far as to claim, absurdly, that it is a heterosexual phenomenon, or even 'sexual abuse.' What a travesty!"

I agree with BodaciousBoi: fairness and equality for all, including boy lovers! Will Bodacious and Pepsi take a stand against all discrimination based on the sexual orientation with which someone is born?

But you have a gift within you. And you know it.

And you've somehow managed to make your way onto a TV Show called "Britain's Got Talent" and you are now standing on a national stage.

You've "never been given a chance before." And it's pretty easy for everybody to understand why. You're an odd-looking lady from the North. They are serving you up to the laughing wolves for the sake of the television audience. This is going to be funny.

Egypt's Top Archaeologist Claims Antony and Cleopatra Tomb Found

Egypt's top archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, has shown off treasures from the site of a tomb which he claims contains the remains of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.

From The Telegraph

Ahead of the start of excavations on Tuesday, Mr Hawass exhibited 22 coins, 10 mummies, an alabaster head and a fragment of a mask with a cleft chin as evidence that the site, a 2,000-year-old temple to the god Osiris, is likely to hold further treasures.

He believes that the Toposiris Magna temple, 30 miles from Egypt's ancient seaside capital of Alexandria, contains the tomb of the doomed lovers that has been shrouded in mystery for so long.

Following Nicaraguan Communist leader Daniel Ortega's wild, exaggerated, and mostly baseless harangue against the United States (referring to our "terrorist actions" in Latin America), President Obama mildly criticized Ortega and then used the same excuse he used while downplaying his relationship with Bill Ayers in trying to distance himself from the actions of his own country -- he was just a little baby when it happened:
In his 17-minute address to the summit, Obama departed from his prepared remarks to mildly rebuke Ortega.

"To move forward, we cannot let ourselves be prisoners of past disagreements. I'm grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened when I was three months old. Too often, an opportunity to build a fresh partnership of the Americas has been undermined by stale debates. We've all heard these arguments before."
What jaw dropping hubris! Bad enough he licks the boots of Oretga by basically agreeing with him. He's just telling him to move on because now that he's president, these horrible things won't happen anymore. Has there ever been such an egotistical president?

McCain Strategist Warns GOP Risks Becoming 'Religious Party'

Isn't it remarkable that the very sort of Republicans who insisted in 1979/1980 that Ronald Reagan was too extreme to be electable, are the very sort telling us now that the key to Republican revival is to embrace sodomite-friendly candidates, like the one that was just soundly defeated by a Marxist, street thug from the nation's most corrupt political machine. And these people are paid for their political advice!

Steve Schmidt, the political "genius" behind the McCain for President campaign.

From Fox News/Politics

John McCain's top adviser from the presidential campaign urged fellow Republicans on Friday to warm up to gay rights and warned that the GOP risks becoming the "religious party" with its opposition to same-sex marriage.

Steve Schmidt, in his first political appearance since the election, spoke at the Washington, D.C., convention for the Log Cabin Republicans -- a grassroots group for gay and lesbian Republicans.

He urged Republicans, in the near-term, to endorse civil unions and stop using the Bible as rationale for gay-marriage opposition.

"If you put public policy issues to a religious test, you risk becoming a religious party," he said. "And in a free country a political party cannot be viable in the long-term if it is seen as a sectarian party."

Schmidt, whose sister is a lesbian and who supports same-sex marriage, said he understands the Republican Party probably won't reverse its resistance to same-sex marriage anytime soon.

But he suggested that the party will be increasingly marginalized if it sustains that opposition long-term.

"If the party is seen as anti-gay, then that is injurious to its candidates" in Democrat-leaning and competitive states, he said.

President Obama also stops short of supporting gay marriage -- he supports civil unions -- but states across the country are moving toward extending such rights to gay couples.

Schmidt predicted gay marriage will create a bigger and bigger divide between the GOP and the electorate in the years ahead. He said that as young voters age, they may adopt conservative views on the economy and national security -- but they will not abandon liberal, social beliefs.

This would put the Republican Party at odds with a swath of voters, Schmidt said.

"I believe Republicans should re-examine the extent that we are being defined by positions on issues that I don't believe are among our core values," he said, while still calling social conservatives an "indispensable part of the conservative coalition."

Schmidt's position is not new. Schmidt recently asserted his support for same-sex marriage rights in March during an interview with the Washington Blade, a newspaper that covers gay and lesbian issues.

But Schmidt's advice to his party took a different tone than the social platform trumpeted Thursday by McCain running mate Sarah Palin -- the Alaska governor gave an out-of-state political speech for the first time in months Thursday, to an anti-abortion group in Indiana.

There she chastised Obama for supporting abortion rights and defended her abortion opposition.

Schmidt also said Friday that Republicans need to reach out, not only to gay voters, but young voters and Hispanics.

"The rapid growth of the Hispanic-American population for instance could soon cost Republicans the entire southwest if we don't recover our previous share of the vote," he said.

Mob Rule Trumps Free Speech at UNC

Witness the tolerance of the liberals. Here, lest anyone be fooled, is what these fascists are all about.

From Human Events
By Jay Schalin and Jenna Ashley Robinson

Free speech got mugged by clueless radical punks in Chapel Hill on Tuesday night.

Former U.S. Congressman Tom Tancredo gave up trying to talk at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill due to disruptive activities by student protestors. The protest was planned and organized by the school’s chapter of the Students for Democratic Society (SDS).

Tancredo was already showing signs of frustration because of his antagonists’ attempts to drown him out and unnerve him with chants, accusations, and obscenities when a window was shattered by protestors outside the building where he was speaking. Cognizant of his physical vulnerability at the front of the over-packed lecture hall, he said, “Alright, I’m outta here,” and sped out of the room.

However, the denial of Tancredo’s right to speak very likely brought his unruly antagonists more ill will among many students whose political views would generally make them allies of the protestors. And the incident might cause the university to finally take the issue of protecting the free speech rights of conservative speakers a little more seriously, instead of cramming them into inadequate lecture halls and “throwing them to the wolves,” as was the case with Tancredo.

Some in attendance expressed anger that their curiosity about either Tancredo or the group that invited him to speak, Youth for Western Civilization, had not been satisfied.

Chelsea Walker, a freshman political science major from Charlotte, said she came because she had heard opposing views that the Youth were both racist and not racist. “I didn’t take want to anybody else’s word on that,” she explained. “I just wanted to hear what they had to say, and I didn’t get to do that because some people don’t seem to be very good at free speech today.”

Because of his strong stance against illegal immigration, Tancredo has become an exceptionally controversial and polarizing figure. In between interruptions, he explained that he was invited “to address higher education for people who are here illegally.”

The Youth for Western Civilization share Tancredo’s views on immigration, but insist their focus is cultural, not racial. Against a backdrop of protestors chanting “racist” and accusing him of being a white supremacist, the group’s Riley Matheson calmly explained in his introduction that “we believe that anyone of any race, any background, any ethnicity can participate in Western civilization.”

The protestors’ bad behavior made Tancredo and Youth for Western Civilization sympathetic figures in some unlikely quarters. Simon Conrad, a junior political science and Spanish major from Charlotte, the son of a Puerto Rican immigrant, said he has long been an advocate for pro-immigration policies. He expressed his annoyance at the protestors for preventing Tancredo from speaking, and said of the Youth for Western Civilization, “I would have like to learn more about them…They don’t seem to be radicals. They’re certainly entitled to their opinions as long as they make those opinions known peacefully…Unfortunately, that right of theirs was suppressed tonight.”

The protestors had a dim grasp of (or total disregard for) actual free speech rights. After the event was over, one protestor who wished to remain anonymous tried to justify the attempt to silence Tancredo by saying that “the First Amendment does not protect the right to hate speech.” Yet the “Free Speech” amendment was intended to protect speech considered offensive by some, since there is no reason to protect speech that offends no one. After all, tyrants consider talk of freedom “offensive.”

Walker took note of the demonstrators’ hypocrisy. “They’re big on their own right to free speech, but they silenced his (Tancredo’s) right to speak,” she said.

One of the SDS organizers, Tyler Oakley, a graduate student in romance languages, denied that the aim was to silence Tancredo, but instead intended to “contest his invitation by Youth for Western Civilization.” In other words, they weren’t so much concerned with shutting Tancredo up, as making sure that nobody like Tancredo was ever invited back to campus -- a much more efficient way to eliminate the opposition.

But the protestors’ actions belied his claim that they had no intent to silence Tancredo. Their raucous antics were almost non-stop, even after Lizette Lopez, the vice president of the Carolina Hispanic Association, pleaded with them to allow the former congressman to speak: “We would at least like to hear what he has to say if he would like to hear what we have to say."

Oakley went on to say that the SDS would continue to target Youth for Western Civilization, “if the group continues to invite people like Tom Tancredo, who espouses a philosophy of hate.”

Which makes a chant performed outside the building after the event by between 50 and 100 protestors all the more chilling, given the unhinged nature of many of the participants: “Against racists, we will fight. We know where you sleep at night.”

As Tancredo said, “What’s more important, free speech or mob rule?

Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, mob rule won out. Whether the campus has turned against the mob after seeing them for what they really are remains to be seen, likewise whether the university will take any course of action to prevent further violations of the right of conservatives to speak, instead of issuing apologies the following day, as they did here.

And perhaps UNC will knock off its nostalgia for the 1960s, and realize that radical mobs do not improve the public discourse. Since the SDS is an officially sanctioned student group (although many among the protestors were not even students), throwing them off campus and ending any financial benefits they receive from the school would be a good place to start.

Faith Groups Increasingly Lose Gay Rights Fights

"Faith organizations and individuals who view homosexuality as sinful and refuse to provide services to gay people are losing a growing number of legal battles that they say are costing them their religious freedom. The lawsuits have resulted from states and communities that have banned discrimination based on sexual orientation. ...Some legal analysts suggest that religious groups that do not support gay rights might lose their tax exemptions because of their politically unpopular views. Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University who supports same-sex marriage, said the Bob Jones (tax exemption) ruling 'puts us on a slippery slope that inevitably takes us to the point where we punish religious groups because of their religious views.'"

From The Washington Post
By Jacqueline L. Salmon

Faith organizations and individuals who view homosexuality as sinful and refuse to provide services to gay people are losing a growing number of legal battles that they say are costing them their religious freedom.

The lawsuits have resulted from states and communities that have banned discrimination based on sexual orientation. Those laws have created a clash between the right to be free from discrimination and the right to freedom of religion, religious groups said, with faith losing. They point to what they say are ominous recent examples:

-- A Christian photographer was forced by the New Mexico Civil Rights Commission to pay $6,637 in attorney's costs after she refused to photograph a gay couple's commitment ceremony.

-- A psychologist in Georgia was fired after she declined for religious reasons to counsel a lesbian about her relationship.

-- Christian fertility doctors in California who refused to artificially inseminate a lesbian patient were barred by the state Supreme Court from invoking their religious beliefs in refusing treatment.

-- A Christian student group was not recognized at a University of California law school because it denies membership to anyone practicing sex outside of traditional marriage.

U.S. Religious Freedom Body Denied Entry into Cuba

From The Christian Post
By Michelle A. Vu

A U.S. religious freedom body was denied visas to enter Cuba for a fact-finding mission that included meetings with the island’s religious communities and government officials, the group said on Monday.

The U.S. Commission on International Freedom (USCIRF), a bipartisan group created to monitor religious freedom in the world, was forced to cancel a planned trip to Cuba when visas were withheld for members of the delegation. The Cuban government did not give any explanation for withholding the visas, the Commission said.

“We are very disappointed by the Cuban government’s refusal to allow an official U.S. delegation to investigate first-hand Cuban citizens’ freedom to believe and practice their faith on the island,” said Felice D. Gaer, chair of USCIRF. “Our Commission has visited China, Vietnam, Laos, Saudi Arabia and other countries. Does the Cuban government have something to hide?”

Cuba has been on USCIRF’s “Watch List” of countries that require close monitoring due to the violations of religious freedom engaged in or tolerated by the governments.

USCIRF noted that it had planned the trip weeks in advance and had received the support of the U.S. State Department for the official visit.

The Commission’s announcement of its visa denial came the same day the Obama administration lifted the travel ban on Cuban-Americans who want to visit their homeland. Cuban-Americans are also now allowed to send money back to their island nation.

Easing of some Cuba-related restrictions marks a break with the nearly half century U.S. policy toward the communist state. Cuba is the only country in the world that most Americans are still barred from visiting.

But there have reportedly been slight improvements in Cuba since Raul Castro, the brother of Fidel Castro, became president last year. Under Raul Castro, Cuba signed two international human rights treaties that his brother Fidel Castro had opposed for 30 years. Raul Castro has also called for public debate about Cuba’s future without fear of reprisal, as long as participants do not challenge the socialist system.

Cuban churches have also reported growth despite the communist government’s restrictions on religion. The number of house churches on the island has soared to anywhere from 3,000 to more than 16,000, according to different sources, up from only 1,100 churches and house churches in 1991 – the year when the Congressional Communist party voted to change Cuba’s constitution status from an atheist to a secular state.

“The Commission has received reports that there are improvements in some sectors in Cuba. As with other countries, we seek to ascertain how much and where,” Gaer acknowledged in a statement. “If everything is so normal in Cuba, then the Cuban government should welcome a USCIRF visit. Not allowing USCIRF’s bipartisan delegation to visit is a very disturbing sign.”

But Cuban President Castro seems to be open to improving U.S.-Cuba relations and has said he is prepared to negotiate with the Obama administration, provided there are no preconditions.

Notre Dame Alumni Withhold Donations Until ND Prez Replaced

From LifeSiteNews
By Kathleen Gilbert

A coalition of University of Notre Dame alumni have unveiled a campaign to withhold donations to their alma mater in an attempt to oust University president Fr. John Jenkins, who is standing by his invitation to President Obama to speak and receive an honorary degree at this year's commencement exercises.

Citing the invitation, as well as Jenkins' "other regrettable decisions over the years," the alumni founders of ReplaceJenkins.com are urging alumni and other Notre Dame contributors to sign a petition pledging to withhold all donations until the president is replaced. (http://www.replacejenkins.com)

"Although we love Notre Dame, our conscience requires that we withhold all financial support from our University until such time as Father Jenkins is replaced as Notre Dame's President with someone who will be more loyal to the teaching of the Catholic Church," states the group on its website.

"ReplaceJenkins.com fully supports academic freedom at the University of Notre Dame, but we believe that the truths revealed by Christ through His Church must be taught and defended by a faithful Catholic University."

The website continues: "We believe that Father Jenkins has, in the best case scenario, shown incredibly poor judgment in honoring President Obama given the radical pro-abortion positions Obama advocates; in the worst case scenario, Father Jenkins is deliberately acting in contradiction to Catholic teaching.

"He should, in good conscience, resign," says the group. "Alternatively, and with charity, he should be removed.

"We welcome the day when we can feel proud of our University once again - and when the University of Notre Dame leads all Catholic colleges as one deeply committed to a culture of life, a role one would expect from Our Lady's University."

The group joins over 300,000 petitioners with the Cardinal Newman Society, as well as 33 U.S. bishops, who have condemned the Obama invitation as gravely contrary to the U.S. Bishops Conference injunction that Catholic schools not honor pro-abortion politicians.

Harvard Chaplain Sees 'Great Wisdom' In Killing Muslim Apostates

But of course it was all a misunderstanding. And that's no surprise. When has a Muslim spokesman in the West who espoused traditional Islamic teachings ever been understood correctly? The poor lambs are forever being misunderstood and misconstrued.

Note also the Muslim student who said Abdul-Basser shouldn't be chaplain, but "asked that he not be named to avoid conflicts with Muslim religious authorities." Diana West has some keen observations about that.

"Chaplain’s E-mail Sparks Controversy," by Melody Y. Yu in the Harvard Crimson, April 14 (thanks to all who sent this in):

Harvard Islamic chaplain Taha Abdul-Basser ’96 has recently come under fire for controversial statements in which he allegedly endorsed death as a punishment for Islamic apostates.

In a private e-mail to a student last week, Abdul-Basser wrote that there was “great wisdom (hikma) associated with the established and preserved position (capital punishment [for apostates]) and so, even if it makes some uncomfortable in the face of the hegemonic modern human rights discourse, one should not dismiss it out of hand.”

The e-mail was forwarded over Muslim student e-mail lists and later picked up by the blogosphere, sparking debate and, in many cases, criticism of Abdul-Basser from those who have interpreted his statement as supporting the execution of those who leave the Islamic religion.

“I believe he doesn’t belong as the official chaplain,” said one Islamic student, who asked that he not be named to avoid conflicts with Muslim religious authorities. “If the Christian ministers said that people who converted from Christianity should be killed, don’t you think the University should do something?” [SEE CLARIFICATION BELOW]

According to the student, many of Abdul-Basser’s other views are “not in line with liberal values, such as notions of human rights. He privileges the medieval discourse of the Islamic jurists, and is not willing to exercise independent thought and judgment beyond a certain limit,” the student said. [...]

A Muslim student at MIT, who also asked to remain anonymous to preserve his relationship with the Islamic community, said the chaplain’s remarks wrongly suggested that only Westerners and Westernized Muslims who did not fully understand Islam would find the killing of apostates objectionable.

“If what he said was what I thought, then it is very shocking and not something that I would expect or want coming out of a chaplain at any major American university,” he said.

But relax. It was all just a function of the inevitable misunderstanding by Islamophobic idiots of these abstruse and complex thinkers:

Abdul-Basser wrote in a later e-mailed statement that he “never expressed the position that individuals who leave Islam or convert from Islam to another religion must be killed. I do not hold this opinion personally.” He explained that he was not advocating for the positions mentioned in his e-mail, but rather “addressing them in the context of the evolution of an Islamic legal doctrine.”

“[Abdul-Basser] was speaking as a chaplain to a student in a private e-mail exchange. One of these e-mails was misinterpreted, misconstrued, and posted on the blogosphere,” said Harvard Islamic Society spokesperson Nafees A. Syed ’10, who praised Abdul-Basser for promoting diversity within HIS and the campus at large.

“His immeasurable contributions should not be overlooked in this matter,” she said....

CLARIFICATION: The April 14 article "Chaplain's E-mail Sparks Controversy" included a quotation from a named Harvard student, who was later granted anonymity when he revealed that his words could bring him into serious conflict with Muslim religious authorities.

Hmm. Why is that?

Homeland Security Targets Abortion Opposition as Warning Sign of "Rightwing Extremism"

. . . Department document authored under virulent pro-abort Janet Napolitano

From LifeSiteNews
By Kathleen Gilbert

A report summary issued by the Department of Homeland Security to local law enforcement officials across the country targets abortion opposition, among other normative conservative viewpoints, as symptomatic of a potentially violent "rightwing extremism."

(To view the full document: http://88.80.13.160.nyud.net/leak/us-dhs-right-wing-extremis...)

The nine-page document entitled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," includes a footnote explaining that the term "rightwing extremism" in the U.S. "may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," as well as groups that reject "federal authority in favor of state or local authority."

The document also warns that "rightwing extremists are harnessing this historical election as a recruitment tool," and as such are "antagonistic toward the new presidential administration and its perceived stance on a range of issues."

The document claims that such groups have "exploited a variety of social issues and political themes to increase group visibility and recruit new members," including "white supremacists' longstanding exploitation of social issues such as abortion, inter-racial crimes, and same-sex marriage."

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, prior to joining the Obama administration, was known to both sides of the abortion debate as an extreme abortion supporter. As Arizona's governor, Napolitano had vetoed several anti-abortion bills, including a partial birth abortion ban and a bill protecting pharmacists' conscience rights.

Numerous conservative and pro-life voices across the country expressed outrage at the federal document's assertions.

"Even though we were kind of concerned that this might happen, I would say this report was still pretty shocking," Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women of America (CWA), told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) today.

Wright said the document was "deja vu" of the Clinton-era taskforce known as VAAPCON - Violence Against Abortion Providers Conspiracy - which had targeted pro-life groups as potential domestic terrorists. VAAPCON investigated groups including CWA, the Christian Coalition, the National Right to Life Committee, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, and even the late Catholic Cardinal John O'Connor of New York.

Wright wrote a letter to U.S. senators late last month to voice concern that a repeat of the VAAPCON affair could result from the return of several former Clinton administration officials in the Obama administration.

“It’s disturbing that the writers of the report consider people who want to protect innocent life from violent deaths as potential terrorists," said Wright. "It shows a dangerous bias and incompetence from people who are tasked with keeping our country safe and free.

"They clearly did not do a professional job because they failed to learn who we are and what motivates us," she continued. "Instead they projected and exposed their irrational prejudices. If pro-lifers are blindly labeled a ‘suspect group’ then DHS may be setting the stage for more serious actions against us.”

Steven Mosher, president of the Population Research Institute (PRI), objected to the document, saying, "The pro-life movement is the largest, most peaceful movement in the history of the United States."

"To group tens of millions of loving pro-life activists with a handful of hateful neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups, as the report does, libels a large segment of the American population," said Mosher. "It is deeply troubling that the government agency in charge of our nation's domestic security would resort to such guilt-by-association tactics."

Mosher also challenged the conflation of the pro-life movement with white supremacism. "Pro-lifers categorically reject this thinly veiled charge of racism," Mosher said. "In fact, the pro-life movement has long been particularly concerned with the high rate of abortion among black women, and has sought to reduce it by providing alternatives to abortion, including privately supported homes for unwed mothers."

Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel for the conservative constitutional law group American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), says the ACLJ is preparing a legal analysis and will be launching a nationwide campaign in the days ahead to demand that the DHS remove the reference from its warning.

"This is an outrageous characterization that raises serious questions about the leadership and direction of the agency charged with protecting Americans in the ongoing battle against terrorism," said Sekulow.

"This characterization is not only offensive to millions of Americans who hold constitutionally-protected views opposing abortion - but also raises serious concerns about the political agenda of an agency with a mandate to protect America."

A Blessing for Catholics

From The American Spectator
By Lisa Fabrizio

In the 1960s, the American Catholic Church, like the rest of the nation, underwent a period of tremendous upheaval. Proceeding from, though not limited to, the willful misinterpretation of the Second Vatican Council by some in the clergy, thousands upon thousands left the Church; older members who could not withstand the confusion, and the younger ones who could not perceive an enduring faith amid the calamitous changes.

But as has happened countless times in her long history, the Church has, by the grace of God, seen good priests and bishops arise to bring her back. Yet still today, far too many American Catholics are like far too many other citizens of their country: they have a vague notion of their history or of the tenets on which they were founded, but not much more than that. Sadly, many of them get serious about the faith a few times a year, much like Americans who recall our founding principles only briefly on the Fourth of July, if at all.

Faithful, practicing Catholics are already painfully aware that, in addition to having to defend their faith to others, they must also sometimes explain it to their fellow Catholics. And, just as knowledge and respect for the U.S. Constitution and capitalism -- which were ingrained upon the American psyche for decades -- have faded into the past, so too it seems incomprehensible that today's Catholics need to be reminded that adultery, euthanasia, and the murder of the unborn constitute grave sin.

Upon this scene comes Barack Obama, the first American president to embrace abortion both personally and politically. Not only does he support a "right" that seeks to cut short innocent life, he has made the case that such life might be the "punishment" for sexual "mistakes." This goes beyond what even some of the most strident advocates of abortion have been willing to say in public, but such is the sorry state of morality in our country.

Now given Barack Obama's radical support of abortion -- even to the extent that he has voted that the lives of the survivors of this heinous act should also be snuffed -- you'd think that he would be wary of alienating the great majority of practicing American Catholics. Yet, spurred on by exit polling that suggests he won the overall Catholic vote by a slim margin, he has managed to elevate some of the most notoriously pro-abortion Catholics to important posts in his administration.

He has even reportedly gone so far as to try and nominate such nominal Catholics as Caroline Kennedy as ambassador to the Vatican. These choices, of course, have been rejected. Try this stinging rebuke from a Vatican source:

The Holy See has always set a very simple standard: the person should not be in opposition to fundamental teachings of the Church that belong to our common shared humanity. He or she may not believe in Catholic dogma if he or she is not a Catholic, but we could not accept someone who is in favor of abortion, or (human) cloning or same-sex unions equated to marriage. That is a fairly simple principle that governments like, say, Spain and Cuba, or Mr. Clinton's administration, have been able to understand without a problem.

Unfortunately, Obama's reward for all this is that he will be the sixth president to speak at Notre Dame and the ninth to receive an honorary degree from that formerly venerated institution. This despite the fiat from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that "…Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

No doubt Notre Dame and its leadership think that they are being courageous in honoring one who has so publicly spit in the eye of Mother Church, but it's hard to imagine why. In reality, true courage lies in opposing popular opinion in defense of principle. As Jesus explained:

If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. (John 15:19)

And here is where we find that God does indeed continue to work in mysterious ways. Notre Dame and Barack Obama have combined to supply the Church with an opportunity to exercise one of its fundamental missions; to provide the faithful with a true teaching moment. Dozens of American bishops have issued statements condemning the Obama invitation and other indiscretions at Notre Dame, perhaps none more eloquently than Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska:

Permit me to add my name as well to the long list of Bishops of the Catholic Church who are utterly appalled at your dedication to immorality and wrong-doing represented by your support for the obscenity called "The Vagina Monologues" and your absolute indifference to the murderous abortion program and beliefs of this President of the United States...I can assure you of my prayers for your conversion, and for the conversion of your formerly Catholic University.

Harsh words indeed, but most welcome to the ears of faithful Catholics everywhere. Let us hope that more and more of our brethren will heed the voices of these brave bishops who understand that one's faith cannot be checked at the church door. And let us all pray together with Pope Benedict XVI who said in America last year:

Praying fervently for the coming of the Kingdom also means...rejecting a false dichotomy between faith and political life, since, as the Second Vatican Council put it, "there is no human activity -- even in secular affairs -- which can be withdrawn from God's dominion."

Sebelius Caught Underreporting Campaign Contributions from Notorious Abortionist: HHS Nomination May be in Jeopardy

From LifeSiteNews
By Kathleen Gilbert

The Washington career of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius may be in danger after it was revealed that the Health nominee reported only a fraction of her campaign contributions from Kansas' late-term abortionist George Tiller. At least one GOP senator reportedly said the issue has raised doubts among Republican senators about the governor, a well-known champion of abortion that Obama picked to head the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS).

After the full senate confirmation vote was delayed earlier this month, the Senate Finance Committee probed Sebelius' connection to notorious late-term Kansas abortionist George Tiller in a list of questions that were published this week with the governor's answers.

However, in her answers Sebelius reported only about one third of the actual sum of campaign contributions that she received from George Tiller, despite a specific question from Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., about Tiller's contributions to her Political Action Committee (PAC).

The senator asked: "Can you describe your relationship with Mr. Tiller? Has he ever contributed to your campaign or has your PAC ever received money from Mr. Tiller or a PAC related to Mr. Tiller?"

Sebelius responded: "I have been familiar with Dr. Tiller for many years because he lives and works in Kansas. Dr. Tiller, like many Kansans, contributed to my campaign for insurance commissioner. I received $12,450 over an eight-year period (1994-2001), which represented 1 percent of my total contributions during that time. Since that time, I have received no donations from Dr. Tiller or any PAC related to him."

Contribution and expenditure reports on file with the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission, however, reportedly show the figure to be closer to $38,450 - a discrepancy of $26,000.

The HHS said yesterday that the omission was an "oversight" Sebelius would correct.

A senior Senate Republican aide told the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) that the affair is now considered a transparency issue as well as a life issue, and is something the GOP intends to probe.

The Sebelius nomination has been stridently opposed by pro-life advocates who have cited her personal and financial ties to the abortion industry, in addition to her pro-abortion record. However, their concerns were not aired in Sebelius' first two confirmation hearings.

"Ironically, Sebelius' relationship with Tiller helped launch her career, and now her attempts to minimize that relationship could very well be her undoing," said Operation Rescue president Troy Newman. "You can't dance with the devil and not expect to have to pay the piper."

"Oversight of taxes is one thing, but this reveals a deadly alliance," Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, told CBN today. Earlier in the confirmation process, Sebelius was forced to pay more than $7,000 in back taxes to fix improper deductions.

"It calls into question how she could oversee America's healthcare system objectively, and not be tainted by these alliances with the abortion industry," Perkins said.

He noted that Sebelius' apparent dissembling on abortion funds coupled with her entrenched opposition to minimal late-term abortion regulations could paint a troubling picture for senators.

"I think this changes the landscape of the Sebelius nomination," said Perkins. "At this point it raises the question: what else has she not told us? What other things remain in Sebelius' closet? ... What other political connections may have tainted her decisions as governor?"

A Great New Archbishop for New York

Archbishop Timothy Dolan has arrived in New York in preparation for his installation as the tenth Archbishop of New York. That installation may be seen via live streaming here beginning at 1:30 pm, EDT, on Wednesday, April 15.

The Archbishop of New York traditionally wields enormous influence within the Church in the United States and beyond. In every case, he eventually becomes a Cardinal, presiding over 2.5 million Catholics in nearly 400 parishes. He also oversees 10 colleges and universities, 9 hospitals, and a vast network of schools and social welfare agencies. But I predict that the influence of Archbishop Timothy Dolan will exceed that of most of his predecessors because he combines strong, orthodox conviction with a huge heart and very winning personality. He gave New Yorkers a foretaste in this impromptu press conference yesterday on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The Holy Father has made a superb choice and given New York a great gift.

Restore the 10th Amendment to the US Constitution Now!

We are delighted to learn that Senator Larry Martin, R-Pickens, chairman of the South Carolina Senate Rules Committee, has asked that chamber to give priority status on the Senate calendar to a resolution affirming our state's sovereignty under the 10th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

This resolution is sweeping through the states, and plans are being developed for more concerted action among the states, to ensure that the federal government abides by the Constitution in the future.

As one would expect, Democrats have criticized this legislation as symbolic and having no "weight of law" in Washington.

We believe that a vote on this legislation will be enormously important in helping South Carolina voters sort out those state legislators who believe in the Constitution, from those who do not. Also, this should be a first step toward collaboration among states in standing up for their sovereign rights. Over twenty-seven states are considering or have enacted the resolution.

When these states unite in refusing the unfunded mandates, the unconstitutional interference in state matters, and refuse the shekels that are invariably followed by shackles, our republic will be restored and renewed in liberty and justice for all.

Those South Carolina legislators unwilling to stand up for the sovereignty of South Carolina should get out of Freedom's way. If they do not, voters will have a grave responsibility to remove them.

In the following video, Governor Rick Perry, a Governor cut from the same cloth as Governor Sanford, endorses the resolution introduced in the Texas legislature.

New 'Conservative Gay' Group - Same Old Objective

From OneNewsNow
By Jim Brown

A conservative activist warns that a new group is pushing a "stealth gay agenda" within the Republican Party.

A new 527 group called GOProud, formed by former members of the Log Cabin Republicans, says it will represent "gay conservatives and their allies," and unlike Log Cabin will focus entirely on federal issues and elections.

Jimmy LaSalvia, the executive director of GOProud, says the organization will support legislation traditionally pushed by homosexual activists, but also speak out on how the Obama administration's tax policy negatively affects homosexual couples.

Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, says although it will go by a different name, GOProud will be carrying out the same mission of the Log Cabin Republicans.

"This is all about promoting the acceptance of homosexuality within the GOP under the guise of so-called 'conservatism,'" says LaBarbera. "The fact is [that] homosexuality is not a conservative issue, it's not a family issue -- and this is all about changing the pro-family platform of the GOP."

LaBarbera says if homosexuals are conservative on economic issues, they can vote Republican, but if the party wants to remain pro-life and pro-family, it cannot be promoting homosexuality and abortion.

Former National Security Advisor Opposes Notre Dame Giving Honorary Degree to Obama

Richard Allen, former National Security Advisor to President Reagan, has spoken out against Notre Dame, his alma mater, giving Barack Hussein Obama an honorary degree. His op-ed in The New York Times follows:

Degrees of Acceptance at Notre Dame

THERE is turmoil in South Bend, Ind. — and around the country. The Rev. John Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame, has invited President Obama to deliver the commencement address at the university on May 17 and to receive an honorary degree.

As a result, many alumni are up in arms denouncing the decision. Priests, bishops, archbishops and cardinals have criticized the university and its president. South Bend’s own bishop, John D’Arcy, has announced that he will not attend. At the same time, other members of the Notre Dame community have responded, with similar force, that Mr. Obama should be allowed to speak.

Both sides are entrenched. Is there a way out?

Inviting a president to the campus of Notre Dame ought not be an issue. Mr. Obama should be welcomed at the school — just as other presidents before him were.

But Father Jenkins also overstates the case when he says that the president is coming to Notre Dame to further “positive engagement.”

American presidents don’t go to commencements to engage in dialogue; they go to use the university platform to deliver a message, their message, not a two-way message. They fly in, speak, then fly back to Washington. Notre Dame provides a great photo op and seal of approval for any elected official.

What’s more, it’s important to remember that Notre Dame is a Catholic institution. The school openly flouts the guidelines of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops when it bestows an honorary degree upon a president who supports something anathema to the faith: abortion. Catholic doctrine holds that life begins at conception; as a candidate, Mr. Obama said that determining when life begins “is above my pay grade,” not an answer at all. There is every sign that his administration has a pro-abortion orientation.

The moral conflict could not be clearer. But here’s a solution: Notre Dame should welcome President Obama as its principal commencement speaker but should not give him an honorary degree. You see, policy positions do matter when it comes to honorary degrees, because the degrees honor something.

In his first appearance after an attempted assassination on March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan traveled to Notre Dame to deliver its commencement address. As Mr. Reagan’s national security adviser, and as someone who earned two degrees at Notre Dame, I went along. Mr. Reagan had special ties to the school. He portrayed the Notre Dame football legend George Gipp in the 1940 classic “Knute Rockne — All American.” (This may be why so many people thought he was Catholic — this, and his Irish name.)

But the reasons for his invitation went much deeper. The Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, the university’s president at the time, told me that he conferred an honorary degree on Mr. Reagan because he admired his unflinching stance during the 1980 campaign on the protection of the unborn. This was a difficult position at the time, for pressures were building in support of abortion rights after the passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973. Mr. Reagan’s views and policies were recognized in the honorary degree he received.

The Obama policy on abortion is pretty much the opposite of Ronald Reagan’s. It is precisely what the Catholic Church fights against. That is why my alma mater, while welcoming him in its midst, ought not confer an honorary degree on Mr. Obama.

Richard V. Allen, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, was Ronald Reagan’s national security adviser.

Columbia's Tax Day TEA Party

Tomorrow, thousands of Americans across the country will organize on Tax Day to protest the tax, borrow, spend and bailout policies of Washington. Whether large or small, these demonstrations will all have one message in common: Enough! Over the past three months, Americans have seen an already out-of-control government spend their borrowed dollars as if a trillion dollars is a drop in the bucket.

After the bailouts that put the White House at the head of a number of major corporations; after a stimulus bill that the Congressional Budget Office said would lower our nation’s GDP at the cost of a trillion dollars, rebuild the welfare state and create few if any jobs; after an omnibus spending bill which combined with the stimulus bill raised discretionary spending nearly 80%; and now with a budget that increases spending by another trillion dollars, doubles our debt and plans an Energy tax that will hurt every American household; Americans are saying: Enough!

The President’s War on the American Dream doesn’t end there. After expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to include wealthy adults; after making a significant down payment on a government controlled national health care plan; after attempting to pass legislation that would take the secret ballot away from workers, that would allow bankruptcy judges to renegotiate your neighbor’s mortgage capital and interest at your expense, that would allow the U.S. Government to set wage and labor controls for every small business in America, Americans are saying: Enough!

So if you want to join your fellow Americans in a grassroots effort that started with nothing more than a few concerned citizens and a rallying cry, we have the information below for you to find them. As Fox News put it: “Conservatives may be catching up with their liberal counterparts in building a Web-driven, grassroots campaign to push their agenda.”

Liberals are going to dismiss this effort, and the media isn’t going to cover it. Leslie Marshall, a nationally syndicated radio host said “the mainstream media are not covering them because they’re not worthy of coverage…Last time I checked, Obama’s not taxing you to death — he is spending to stimulate the economy and he is an elected official.”

So, Leslie wants American voters to be quiet and take their tax hikes and spending and borrowing and bailing out, and accept that this is the America we now live in. After all, Obama is an elected official! Despite Leslie, and other members of the media elite who will try and ignore this groundswell, viral media organizations like Pajamas TV, Twitter and Facebook will allow everyone to have the power to say to the Leslie Marshall’s of the country: Enough!

Tomorrow, We the People have that opportunity!

Columbia will be holding its own "Tea Party" along with thousands of other rallies scheduled on the same day across the country. Thousands of South Carolinian's will be gathering in front of the State House on April 15th between 12:30 and 2:00 to protest the Government Bailouts and Taxes. This grassroots movement is giving the people of our country who have become tired of sitting on the sidelines, the chance to speak out about increasing government, increasing taxes, and the reckless way this government is spending our great nation into debt.

This event is shaping up to be one of the biggest events that South Carolina has seen in a long time. Governor Mark Sanford and Senator Jim DeMint have confirmed that they will speak at this event. Bill Connor, candidate for Lt. Governor and former Kershaw County GOP chairwoman Sheri Few will also speak. And we will also hear from the people themselves, our Columbia organizer, Britton Clark, who runs a local real estate company.

PARKING INFO

Two parking garages are allowing us to use their facilities. They are located at the corners of Lincoln and Washington Street and Senate and Park Street. Tell the attendants "Stand Up" and you will get a discount to park for $3.00. They asked that you bring three $1.00 bills to pay as you enter. Once the event is over, they will open the exit gate and keep it raised so that everyone will be able to leave quickly. We suggest people arrive by at least 11:45 AM so that they can find a place to park and make it to the State House. There should be a shuttle service available as well.

Tax Day Tea Party has coordinated with SC Fair Tax Rally who has secured the State Fair parking, entrance thru gate #11 on Bluff Rd. Shuttle buses will drop you off at the State House, and after that event, the shuttles will transport you to the Township Auditorium if you at attending that Rally. If you wish to attend Fair Tax, you must RSVP at www.scfairtax.org

New Report Shows Path to Economic Recovery for States

In the midst of economic turmoil, federal bailouts, and budget deficits in more than 40 states, a new report from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) offers a roadmap to recovery based on economic performance trends from states over the last 10 years. The second edition of Rich States, Poor States: ALEC-Laffer State Economic Competitiveness Index shows how the federal bailout of the states may simply encourage out-of-control spending by states, which is up 124 percent over the last 10 years, without requiring them to make the tough decisions needed to bring about financial stability.

“Too many states were too eager to add programs and increase spending during the good times, but we now face very difficult choices,” said Indiana Senator Jim Buck, Chairman of ALEC’s Tax and Fiscal Policy Task Force. “While we need to make tough choices to live within our means, we also need to remain focused on policies that foster economic development and job growth as the best solution to our budget woes.”

Co-author and renowned economist Dr. Arthur B. Laffer summarized the report's finding when he said, “States cannot tax their way into prosperity.” Rich States, Poor States presents rankings of the 50 states based on the relationship between policies and performance, revealing which states are best positioned to make a recovery, and which are not.

Laffer and his co-authors, Stephen Moore, senior economics writer at The Wall Street Journal, and Jonathan Williams, director of the Tax and Fiscal Policy Task Force for ALEC, analyze how economic competitiveness drives income, population and job growth in the states. They found that, “states with a high and rising tax burden are more likely to suffer through economic decline, while those with lower and falling tax burdens are more likely to enjoy robust economic growth.”

According to Williams, “The top performing states keep taxes, spending, and regulatory burdens low, while the biggest losers in the book tend to share similar policies of high tax rates, unsustainable spending and regulation.”

“New York earns the dubious distinction of having the worst economic outlook of any state,” according to the report. “The New York governor just might have broken the record for the number of bad ideas he put forward during a recent 17-minute budget address—most notably his 137 proposed tax increases come to mind.”

“As legislators, we know that we are in direct competition with other states for human and investment capital,” said Utah Revenue and Taxation Committee Chairman, Senator Wayne Niederhauser. “Rich States, Poor States has provided invaluable information to strengthen our efforts to reduce tax burdens in Utah and we are happy to again be ranked as the most competitive state in the nation.”
TOP FIVE STATES

1. Utah

2. Colorado

3. Arizona

4. Virginia

5. South Dakota

BOTTOM FIVE STATES

46. New Jersey

47. Maine

48. Rhode Island

49. Vermont

50. New York
Rich States, Poor States shows that “The decline of California is probably the best evidence that we can present as to the impact of poor state policy making on the economic pulse of a state.” In chapter two, the report contrasts the fiscal policy structures of California and Texas to “demonstrate how economic theory actually works in the real world.”

“California continues to increase regulations, raise taxes and spend profligately,” state the authors. “Texas, on the other hand, has a pro-growth economic environment with a competitive tax system, sound regulations and spending discipline that will help Texas maintain its superior
performance well into the future.”

Christian Conservatism Just Getting Started

From OneNewsNow
By Star Parker

There are some today who suggest that Christian conservatism as a political force is over.

Those who make this claim point to the fact that liberal Democrats now control the White House and both houses of Congress; that the number of Americans self identifying as Democrats compared to Republicans has increased; that the direction of public opinion, particularly among young people, on social issues is liberal; and that the Republican Party itself has been divided over the conservative agenda.

But those who write off Christian conservatism as a political force have underestimated the driving compulsion behind traditional faith and American freedom. Just looking at who is in power does not reveal the depth of division in the country today and for the reasons that the nation is so deeply divided, may I suggest that Christian conservatism will not only survive but will thrive.

An Historic Opportunity to Reassert States' Rights

Francis Marion, South Carolina's First Freedom Fighter

If ever there was a time for state leaders to stand up for freedom and the Constitutional rights and sovereignty of their states and say "no" to an increasingly fascist, thug-run federal government, this is it. Is Governor Sanford the only elected leader in South Carolina who sees what is at stake? Is there anyone else who recognizes the historic opportunity and the need to defend the rights and freedoms of our people and institutions? How can anyone reading the following editorial in today's Washington Times not recognize both the dangers and the opportunities that confront us?

South Carolina needs more than websites, transparency and public relations campaigns; it needs bold and decisive leadership.

The Roach Motel

Banks are getting trapped in TARP

Editorial from The Washington Times

Government bailout funds are the roach motel for financial institutions - they check in, but they can't check out.

Banks that were forced to take bailout money are running into political obstacles that prevent them from repaying it. The White House is unwilling to give up the additional control over the banks - the ability to make operational decisions, fire executives and dictate pay scales - that the bailout funds allow. All this has happened as the Congressional Budget Office has raised the estimated cost of the Troubled Asset Relief Program to taxpayers by almost $200 billion to a total bill of $356 billion.

In many cases, this government dependency is not the fault of the banks because many were being run responsibly. According to Fox News judicial analyst and New Jersey Superior Court Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, banks with no financial problems were forced to sell stock to the government or face the threat of costly and harassing public audits. This happened to banks that had "no bad debt, no credit default swaps, no liquidity problems, and no subprime loans" and didn't want or need any government funds. Judge Napolitano called the government actions what they are: "classic extortion."

Australia Experiencing More Violent Crime Despite Gun Ban

From Examiner.com
By Howard Nemerov

In a previous article, we examined the revisionist history of anti-rights proponents who claim that since Australia instituted their gun ban, there have been no mass murders, despite the recent “gun-free” massacre of 135 Australians.

It is a common fantasy that gun bans make society safer. Peace Movement Aotearoa, based in New Zealand, calls itself a “national networking organization…interested in peace and social justice.” A fact sheet on their site is entitled Sharp Drop in Gun Crime Follows Tough Australian Firearm Laws. It’s very revealing that gun ban organizations validate gun control by focusing on gun-involved violence while avoiding any mention of overall violent crime trends.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there was a slight drop in the percent of murders committed with a firearm between 2001 and 2007 (16.0% and 13.4%, respectively). However, the percentage was highest in 2006 (16.3%) and remains higher than the low of 8.9% in 2005. There is no difference in the use of a firearm in robbery: Guns were used in 6.4% of all robberies in both 2001 and 2007.

In 2002–five years after enacting its gun ban–the Australian Bureau of Criminology acknowledged there is no correlation between gun control and the use of firearms in violent crime: “The percentage of homicides committed with a firearm continued its declining trend since 1969.”

Even the head of Australia’s Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn, acknowledged that the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime:
There has been a drop in firearm-related crime, particularly in homicide, but it began long before the new laws and has continued on afterwards. I don't think anyone really understands why. A lot of people assume that the tougher laws did it, but I would need more specific, convincing evidence …

There has been a more specific … problem with handguns, which rose up quite rapidly and then declined. The decline appears to have more to do with the arrest of those responsible than the new laws. As soon as the heroin shortage hit, the armed robbery rate came down. I don't think it was anything to do with the tougher firearm laws.

Weatherburn also acknowledged that the best crime measure consists of “the arrest of those responsible.”

Moreover, Australia and America both experienced similar decreases in murder rates: Between 1995 and 2007, Australia saw a 31.9% decrease; without a gun ban, America’s rate dropped 31.7%.

Now for the rest of the story

During the same time period, all other violent crime indices increased in Australia: assault rose 49.2% and robbery 6.2%. Sexual assault–Australia’s equivalent term for rape–increased 29.9%. Overall, Australia’s violent crime rate rose 42.2%. At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased 31.8%: rape dropped 19.2%; robbery decreased 33.2%; aggravated assault dropped 32.2%. Australian women are now raped over three times as often as American women (whom ABC reports are arming themselves at record rates because of safety concerns):
More women, from soccer moms to professionals like the ones at the Blue Ridge Arsenal gun range in Chantilly, Va., are packing heat for sport, self-empowerment and protection.
While this doesn’t prove that more guns would impact crime rates, it does prove that gun control is a flawed policy. Moreover, for groups like Peace Movement Aotearoa, it’s apparently social justice when more people are raped, robbed, and assaulted, as long as they cannot defend themselves with firearms. This highlights the most important point: Gun banners promote failed policy irregardless of the consequences to the people who must live with them.

A former civilian disarmament supporter and medical researcher, Howard Nemerov investigates the civil liberty of self defense and examines the issue of gun control.

Pastor Warren, Like Peter, Denies Christ (at least His teachings) During Holy Week

Perhaps his Holy Week betrayals account for Pastor Rick Warren canceling his Easter Sunday appearance on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" moments before he was to appear. Being caught in lies is damaging for a politician, fatal for a spiritual leader.

From LifeSiteNews
Editorial By John-Henry Westen

Rick Warren, the popular pastor who seems to have taken on the mantle of 'America's Pastor' from Billy Graham, was a strong defender of the family, and of marriage - until recently. One of the areas of greatest conflict between Christian morality and worldly morality today is homosexuality.

With the advent of modern ultra-sound technology and thus the increasing awareness of the humanity of the unborn child, many today will forgive you for being pro-life. After all it's a human rights issue; you're standing up for those smaller and weaker than yourself. But when it comes to homosexuality, there's no disagreement allowed in this day and age.

Pastor Warren came at the issue of homosexuality from a thoroughly Christian perspective - out of concern for the physical and spiritual wellbeing of those practicing destructive sexual lifestyles. But on April 6, the Monday of Holy Week, Rick Warren appeared on CNN's Larry King Live program where he said he was "oblivious" to the Iowa court decision to legalize same-sex 'marriage', explaining, "that's not even my agenda."

"I am not an anti-gay or an anti-gay marriage activist. Never have been, never will be," Warren told King at the outset of the interview. "During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop 8 was going." (see the video of it here: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2009/04/07/lkl.ric... )

When pressed, Warren admitted that he did tell his congregants to vote in support of Prop 8. "I just simply made a note in a newsletter" he said. He likely did not recall that he had in fact video taped a message of over 2 minutes length in support of Prop 8. That video was featured on the Prop 8 website and is still available on Warren's own Saddleback Church website here: http://saddlebackfamily.com/blogs/newsandviews/index.html?co...;

The two videos, the CNN clip and the Prop 8 promo by Warren, make for a rather embarrassing juxtaposition when played back to back. The seriousness of Warren's denials on Monday, however, go way beyond any kind of misrepresentation or forgotten video.

Warren is chastised in his own words. On the video Prop 8 promo video he says: "If you believe what the Bible says about marriage, you need to support Proposition 8."

For an evangelical Christian, believing the Bible is literally all there is. In denying the Bible - you deny Christ. Warren has point blank denied supporting Prop 8, and, given his own previous assessment of the matter, that raises a question about denying Biblical truth and thus denying Christ.

Just over 2000 years ago this week, another follower of Christ denied his Lord out of fear. Peter on this very Holy Thursday night, after Jesus' arrest, denied that he knew Jesus three times before the cock crowed - just as Christ had predicted he would. The crowing of the cock reminded Peter of Jesus' prophesy and brought him to tears of repentance.

Rick Warren is a beloved brother in the Lord. He has defended life and family, he has promoted the love of Christ and been steadfast for many years. He has also grown immensely popular, even to the height of delivering the invocation at the Presidential inauguration.

But what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?

Like Peter, Rick Warren has a chance of becoming a real leader and being crucified with Christ, receiving the Kingdom which is not of this world. He could also betray him for 30 pieces of silver, the soon to be worthless coinage of fame, popularity and the world's esteem.

This is the choice now set before Pastor Warren.

Peter repented after he denied Christ, and thereafter became a great leader in the Church. After the resurrection Christ asked Peter three times, "Do you love me?" and when Peter responded in the affirmative Jesus instructed him "feed my sheep".

I believe that Pastor Warren will be similarly tested, specifically on the issue of gay marriage. With four states having already succumbed to the massive pressure against the traditional family, that's not a hard prediction to make.

The pro-family movement needs Christian leaders like Pastor Warren to continue their strong defense of the family, especially at this critical time.

After Peter repented and reaffirmed his love for Christ, Jesus informed him that when he was young went about as he would, but when older he would be led where he did not want to go and have his hands stretched out (signifying Peter's later crucifixion). Yes, this road of following Christ's truth on hard issues such as homosexuality may lead to unpopularity, vilification and even worse.

But that should only cause you to rejoice. Since, as the Scripture says: "Blessed are you when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven."

Pope Benedict's Easter Message to the City and the World

URBI ET ORBI MESSAGE
OF HIS HOLINESS
POPE BENEDICT XVI

EASTER 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Rome and throughout the world,

From the depths of my heart, I wish all of you a blessed Easter. To quote Saint Augustine, “Resurrectio Domini, spes nostra – the resurrection of the Lord is our hope” (Sermon 261:1). With these words, the great Bishop explained to the faithful that Jesus rose again so that we, though destined to die, should not despair, worrying that with death life is completely finished; Christ is risen to give us hope (cf. ibid.).

Indeed, one of the questions that most preoccupies men and women is this: what is there after death? To this mystery today’s solemnity allows us to respond that death does not have the last word, because Life will be victorious at the end. This certainty of ours is based not on simple human reasoning, but on a historical fact of faith: Jesus Christ, crucified and buried, is risen with his glorified body. Jesus is risen so that we too, believing in him, may have eternal life. This proclamation is at the heart of the Gospel message. As Saint Paul vigorously declares: “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” He goes on to say: “If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied” (1 Cor 15:14,19). Ever since the dawn of Easter a new Spring of hope has filled the world; from that day forward our resurrection has begun, because Easter does not simply signal a moment in history, but the beginning of a new condition: Jesus is risen not because his memory remains alive in the hearts of his disciples, but because he himself lives in us, and in him we can already savour the joy of eternal life.

The resurrection, then, is not a theory, but a historical reality revealed by the man Jesus Christ by means of his “Passover”, his “passage”, that has opened a “new way” between heaven and earth (cf. Heb 10:20). It is neither a myth nor a dream, it is not a vision or a utopia, it is not a fairy tale, but it is a singular and unrepeatable event: Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary, who at dusk on Friday was taken down from the Cross and buried, has victoriously left the tomb. In fact, at dawn on the first day after the Sabbath, Peter and John found the tomb empty. Mary Magdalene and the other women encountered the risen Jesus. On the way to Emmaus the two disciples recognized him at the breaking of the bread. The Risen One appeared to the Apostles that evening in the Upper Room and then to many other disciples in Galilee.

The proclamation of the Lord’s Resurrection lightens up the dark regions of the world in which we live. I am referring particularly to materialism and nihilism, to a vision of the world that is unable to move beyond what is scientifically verifiable, and retreats cheerlessly into a sense of emptiness which is thought to be the definitive destiny of human life. It is a fact that if Christ had not risen, the “emptiness” would be set to prevail. If we take away Christ and his resurrection, there is no escape for man, and every one of his hopes remains an illusion. Yet today is the day when the proclamation of the Lord’s resurrection vigorously bursts forth, and it is the answer to the recurring question of the sceptics, that we also find in the book of Ecclesiastes: “Is there a thing of which it is said, ‘See, this is new’?” (Ec 1:10). We answer, yes: on Easter morning, everything was renewed. “Mors et vita, duello conflixere mirando: dux vitae mortuus, regnat vivus – Death and life have come face to face in a tremendous duel: the Lord of life was dead, but now he lives triumphant.” This is what is new! A newness that changes the lives of those who accept it, as in the case of the saints. This, for example, is what happened to Saint Paul.

Many times, in the context of the Pauline year, we have had occasion to meditate on the experience of the great Apostle. Saul of Tarsus, the relentless persecutor of Christians, encountered the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, and was “conquered” by him. The rest we know. In Paul there occurred what he would later write about to the Christians of Corinth: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come” (2 Cor 5:17). Let us look at this great evangelizer, who with bold enthusiasm and apostolic zeal brought the Gospel to many different peoples in the world of that time. Let his teaching and example inspire us to go in search of the Lord Jesus. Let them encourage us to trust him, because that sense of emptiness, which tends to intoxicate humanity, has been overcome by the light and the hope that emanate from the resurrection. The words of the Psalm have truly been fulfilled: “Darkness is not darkness for you, and the night is as clear as the day” (Ps 139 [138]:12). It is no longer emptiness that envelops all things, but the loving presence of God. The very reign of death has been set free, because the Word of life has even reached the “underworld”, carried by the breath of the Spirit (v. 8).

If it is true that death no longer has power over man and over the world, there still remain very many, in fact too many signs of its former dominion. Even if through Easter, Christ has destroyed the root of evil, he still wants the assistance of men and women in every time and place who help him to affirm his victory using his own weapons: the weapons of justice and truth, mercy, forgiveness and love. This is the message which, during my recent Apostolic Visit to Cameroon and Angola, I wanted to convey to the entire African continent, where I was welcomed with such great enthusiasm and readiness to listen. Africa suffers disproportionately from the cruel and unending conflicts, often forgotten, that are causing so much bloodshed and destruction in several of her nations, and from the growing number of her sons and daughters who fall prey to hunger, poverty and disease. I shall repeat the same message emphatically in the Holy Land, to which I shall have the joy of travelling in a few weeks from now. Reconciliation – difficult, but indispensable – is a precondition for a future of overall security and peaceful coexistence, and it can only be achieved through renewed, persevering and sincere efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. My thoughts move outwards from the Holy Land to neighbouring countries, to the Middle East, to the whole world. At a time of world food shortage, of financial turmoil, of old and new forms of poverty, of disturbing climate change, of violence and deprivation which force many to leave their homelands in search of a less precarious form of existence, of the ever-present threat of terrorism, of growing fears over the future, it is urgent to rediscover grounds for hope. Let no one draw back from this peaceful battle that has been launched by Christ’s Resurrection. For as I said earlier, Christ is looking for men and women who will help him to affirm his victory using his own weapons: the weapons of justice and truth, mercy, forgiveness and love.

Resurrectio Domini, spes nostra! The resurrection of Christ is our hope! This the Church proclaims today with joy. She announces the hope that is now firm and invincible because God has raised Jesus Christ from the dead. She communicates the hope that she carries in her heart and wishes to share with all people in every place, especially where Christians suffer persecution because of their faith and their commitment to justice and peace. She invokes the hope that can call forth the courage to do good, even when it costs, especially when it costs. Today the Church sings “the day that the Lord has made”, and she summons people to joy. Today the Church calls in prayer upon Mary, Star of Hope, asking her to guide humanity towards the safe haven of salvation which is the heart of Christ, the paschal Victim, the Lamb who has “redeemed the world”, the Innocent one who has “reconciled us sinners with the Father”. To him, our victorious King, to him who is crucified and risen, we sing out with joy our Alleluia!

Vienna Boys' Choir - "Regina Coeli" - W. A. Mozart

The Vienna Boys' Choir was founded in 1498 and is one of the best known boys' choirs in the world. Among many great musicians that the choir has worked with through the centuries are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Caldara, Antonio Salieri, Heinrich Isaac, Paul Hofhaimer, Heinrich Ignaz Biber, Johann Fux, Christoph Willibald Gluck, and Anton Bruckner.

The Regina Coeli is sung in place of the Angelus during the Easter season, from Holy Saturday through Pentecost Sunday. The author is unknown, although legend has it that St Gregory the Great heard angels chanting the first three lines one Easter morning in Rome, while following in procession the icon of the Virgin painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist. The setting of Regina Coeli performed above by the Vienna Boys' Choir is one of three composed by Mozart.

Marriage for All

From Off the Record
Catholic World News

In every nation, in every epoch, homosexuals have been free to marry. In every nation, in every epoch, homosexuals have not been free to marry other homosexuals. Homosexuals have been prohibited, exactly as heterosexuals have been prohibited, from marrying persons of the same sex. There was no question of discrimination on the basis of orientation because the appetites of the consenting parties (as is the case in every contractual obligation) were beside the point. Until now.

Partisans of same-sex marriage pretend that marriage is a good they wish to extend to those it has been arbitrarily denied: hence campaigns named "Marriage for All" or "Marriage Equality." But the publicly dispensable good (the kind a marriage license gives you) has always been available. What they resent is the moral value accorded marriage -- an honor markedly weaker today than in the past, yet still potent enough to cause gnashing of teeth among the innovators. That honor is what they want to abolish.

Imagine that the attitudes of a century ago -- when marriage was accorded the power to ennoble sexual relations -- could be beamed forward into the present. And imagine today's parents of a young man betrothed to another young man, urging him to remain a virgin until his wedding so as to preserve intact his and his fiancé's purity. Or imagine a same-sex couple, piously abstaining from fellatio or rimming during the season of Lent, only to resume it with prayerful joy on Easter morning. Simply to raise these possibilities is to see how grotesque they are. The decision to countenance same-sex unions is not to shift sodomy in one's books from the "immoral" to the "moral" column, it is to dispense with the category of sexual morality full stop. It is to rip up one's passport and renounce one's citizenship in the commonwealth of sexual morality.

Gay activists taunt the rest of us that conventional man-woman marriage is in a shambles today, and they're right. But their proposed innovation, as they really understand and rarely admit, is a choice for moral anarchy. Within their world there is no question of calling one act pure and another act impure, because the notion of purity has to be put to death before their project is embarked on. Chastity cannot be ennobling because to embrace same-sex congress is to debunk nobility. Even the photos from the Pride parades display a kind of sack-dance gloating over the dethronement of the concepts of purity and sexual integrity; it's a burlesque of those values that marriage -- real marriage -- was ordained to uphold.

Same-sex marriage is a war on honor. And it appears to be winning.

I'm a Bad Catholic But Even I Must Defend My Church Against Mr Blair's Belief He's Now God

From The Daily Mail
By Tom Utley

How typical of Tony Blair. He's been a Roman Catholic for only 20 minutes, yet he's already lecturing the Pope on how to 'modernise' the founding Church of Christendom, so as to make its doctrines more congenial to Anthony Charles Lynton Blair. I honestly think the poor man has gone mad. He really does seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that he's God.

In an interview with the gay magazine Attitude, the former Prime Minister rebukes Benedict XVI for his 'entrenched' views on homosexuality, telling him that he must recognise how the world is changing and adapt accordingly.

Now, if you ask me, it's rather the point of a Church's moral teachings that they're bedded-in and resistant to the shifting breezes of public opinion and fashion. But, of course, 'entrenched' has always been a boo-word in Mr Blair's vocabulary. In his philosophy, any idea or institution that has stood the test of more than a couple of years must self-evidently need digging up and pulling to bits.

Two unmovable forces - the Pope's doctrine and Tony Blair's ego

Two unmovable forces - the Pope's doctrine and Tony Blair's ego

But I must let him explain himself in his own, hilarious, words, which must surely consign parodists to the dole queues for ever.

Living Holy Week: Holy Thursday - Cardinal Rigali

Tölzer Knabenchor - "Ave Verum Corpus" - W. A. Mozart

Pange Lingua

Pange Lingua Gloriosi Corporis Mysterium
is an evocative hymn written by St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) for the Feast of Corpus Christi. It is also sung on Holy Thursday, during the procession from the church to the place where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved until Good Friday. The hymn expresses the doctrine of transubstantiation, in which the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ.

Sing, my tongue, the Savior's glory,
of His flesh the mystery sing;
of the Blood, all price exceeding,
shed by our immortal King,
destined, for the world's redemption,
from a noble womb to spring.
Of a pure and spotless Virgin
born for us on earth below,
He, as Man, with man conversing,
stayed, the seeds of truth to sow;
then He closed in solemn order
wondrously His life of woe.
On the night of that Last Supper,
seated with His chosen band,
He the Pascal victim eating,
first fulfills the Law's command;
then as Food to His Apostles
gives Himself with His own hand.
Word-made-Flesh, the bread of nature
by His word to Flesh He turns;
wine into His Blood He changes;
what though sense no change discerns?
Only be the heart in earnest,
faith her lesson quickly learns.
Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail;
Lo! o'er ancient forms departing,
newer rites of grace prevail;
faith for all defects supplying,
where the feeble senses fail.
To the everlasting Father,
and the Son who reigns on high,
with the Holy Ghost proceeding
forth from Each eternally,
be salvation, honor, blessing,
might and endless majesty.
Amen. Alleluia.

Congressional Black Caucus Smitten With Castro

From American Thinker
By Humberto Fontova

Cuba's atrocious record on race was somehow overlooked by the Congressional Black Caucus. Last week the Stalinist regime that jailed and tortured the longest suffering black political prisoner in modern history (Eusebio Penalver) rolled out the red carpet for 6 smitten members of the CBC. All of these U.S. legislators met with "President" Raul Castro while a lucky three secured back-stage passes to meet Fidel himself.

Not since Ann Margaret's reaction to Conrad Birdie's kiss has anything been recorded to match these U.S. legislators' reaction to these meetings.

"He looked directly into my eyes!" gasped Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Ca.) "and then he asked: how can we help President Obama? Fidel Castro really wants President Obama to succeed." (no doubt!)

"It was quite a moment to behold!" hyperventilated Rep. Barbara Lee. (D-CA) "Fidel Castro was very engaging and very energetic."

"He's one of the most amazing human beings I've ever met!" gushed Emanuel Cleaver(D-Mo)

"Raul Castro was a very engaging, down-to-earth and kind man," according to Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) "someone who I would favor as a neighbor. It was almost like visiting an old friend," (a Freudian slip, perhaps? Bobby Rush, after all, was a card-carrying Black Panther who did prison time)

Lest we forget: these Black U.S. legislators were raving about a regime that jailed political prisoners at a higher rate than Stalin, and executed more people (out of a population of 6.4 million) in its first three years in power than Hitler executed (out of a population of 70 million) in the Reich's first six.
"The Negro is indolent and spends his money on frivolities, whereas the European is forward-looking, organized and intelligent... We're going to do for blacks exactly what blacks did for the Cuban revolution. By which I mean: NOTHING!"
- (Ernesto "Che" Guevara.)
Che was much too modest. "Nothing" is not exactly accurate for Castroite treatment of Cuba's blacks. In fact, these lily-white European soldier's sons (Fidel and Raul) forcibly overthrew a Cuban government where Cuban Blacks served as President of the Senate, Minister of Agriculture, Chief of Army, and Head of State (Fulgencio Batista), a grandson of slaves who was born in a palm-roofed shack. Not that you'll learn any of this from the liberals' exclusive educational source on pre-Castro Cuba: Godfather II.

Today the prison population in Stalinist/Apartheid Cuba is 90 percent black while only 9 percent of the ruling Stalinist party is black.

Pope Benedict XVI: Experiencing the Central Events of Redemption

VATICAN CITY, 8 APR 2009 (VIS) - In the general audience, held this morning in St. Peter's Square, the Pope dedicated his remarks to Holy Week. "For us as Christians", he said, "this is the most important week of the year, offering us the chance to immerse ourselves in the central events of Redemption, to relive the Easter Mystery, the great Mystery of the faith".

The Holy Father explained how Jesus "did not wish to use the fact of His being God, His glorious dignity and His power, as an instrument of triumph and a sign of distance" between Him and us.

"For love", the Pope continued, "He wished to 'empty Himself' and become our brother. For love He shared our condition, the condition of all men and women".

Benedict XVI then went on to explain that the Chrism Mass is "a prelude to the Easter Triduum which begins tomorrow". At that Mass "priestly vows pronounced on the day of Ordination are renewed". The ceremony "has particular significance this year because it comes as a kind of preparation for the Year for Priests, which I have called to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of the saintly 'Cure of Ars' and which will begin on 19 June. Also in the Chrism Mass the oil used for the sick and for catechumens will be blessed and the Chrism consecrated", he said.

During Holy Thursday Mass "in Coena Domini", the Church "commemorates the institution of the Eucharist, the priestly ministry and the new commandment ('mandatum novum') of charity which Jesus left to His disciples", the Pope explained. Holy Thursday, then, "is a renewed invitation to give thanks unto God for the supreme gift of the Eucharist, which must be welcomed with devotion and adored with living faith".

Good Friday, the Pope proceeded, is "the day of the passion and crucifixion of the Lord. ... Christ's death recalls the mass of pain and evil weighing upon humanity in every epoch: the crushing weight of our own mortality, the hatred and violence which still bloody the earth today. The Lord's passion continues in the suffering of mankind".

Yet, "if Good Friday is a day full of sadness, it is at the same time the best day on which to reawaken our faith, to strengthen our hope and the courage to carry our cross with humility and trust, abandoning ourselves to God in the certainty of His support and His victory".

Benedict XVI then highlighted how "this hope is nourished in the great silence of Easter Saturday as we await the resurrection of Jesus". On that day "the Church keeps prayerful vigil, like Mary and with Mary, sharing her feelings of pain and of trust in God. Rightly we are advised to spend the whole day in an atmosphere of prayer, one favourable to meditation and reconciliation. The faithful are encouraged to avail themselves of the Sacrament of Penance so that, thus renewed, they can participate in the Easter celebrations".

Referring then to the Easter vigil, "mother of all vigils", Benedict reminded people that "once again the victory of light over darkness, of life over death, will be proclaimed, and the Church will joy at the meeting with her Lord. Thus will we enter the atmosphere of Easter Day".

The Holy Father concluded by inviting the faithful "to enter into the Cenacle with the Virgin Mary, to stand with her at the foot of the cross, to watch over the dead Christ, hopefully awaiting the bright dawn day of resurrection".

Obama's Moves a Step Toward Fascism

From The Chicago Sun-Times
By Steve Stanek

This week has brought two more reasons to be afraid --very afraid -- about what our federal government is up to.

The headline-grabbing reason is, of course, the firing of General Motors chief executive Richard Wagoner by President Obama and his administration's attempt to force a merger of Chrysler with Italy's Fiat. The other reason, all but ignored by the news media, is the declaration by Timothy Geithner that some banks will receive huge amounts of new government Troubled Asset Relief Program money even if they don't want it.

GM and Chrysler have received about $17.4 billion from the federal government over the past few months and want $22 billion more. Obama is holding off on the additional $22 billion to force the moves he wants. Those moves include the removal of Wagoner and remaking of GM's board of directors (with no concern for what GM stockholders want) and giving Chrysler 30 days to merge with Fiat.

Obama, Geithner, et al. tell us they do not want to run companies. But when they fire chief executives, install new ones, remake boards of directors and force mergers, that is exactly what they are doing.

Geithner's announcement that his agency is conducting "stress tests" that could force banks to take more federal money comes just a week after leaders of the nation's largest banks met with Obama and told him they want to pay back the TARP money they have already received, not take more of it.

Last week, Geithner announced he would decide, apparently with no firm guidelines, which companies -- including nonfinancial firms -- could pose "systemic risk" to the financial system. Such a designation would give the government unprecedented powers to inject itself into any business it chooses.

All of us -- not just corporate executives and shareholders -- should be shocked and frightened by these actions. The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to appropriate money, yet trillions of dollars have been spent, borrowed and committed in the form of various guarantees without congressional approval.

The Constitution also blocks the government from interfering in private contracts. Various court rulings since the 1930s have weakened the protections, and now the executive branch is shredding them.

In addition to recent attacks on (admittedly unjustifiable) contractual bonuses at American International Group, the administration has recently moved to impose unjustifiable mortgage "cram downs" that require lenders to rework loans.

These recent actions amount to a fundamental move away from individual rights and toward state corporatism -- better known as fascism.

  • consistently give special interest groups billions of dollars in earmarks to help get themselves re-elected?
  • want to take your wealth and redistribute it to others?
  • punish those who practice responsible financial behavior and reward those who do not?
  • admit to using the financial hurt of millions as an opportunity to push their political agenda?
  • run up trillions of dollars of debt and then sell that debt to countries such as China?
  • want government controlled health care?
  • want to take away the right to vote with a secret ballot in union elections?
  • refuse to stop the flow of millions of illegal immigrants into our country?
  • appoint a defender of child pornography to the Number 2 position in the Justice Department?
  • want to force doctors and other medical workers to perform abortions against their will?
  • want to impose a carbon tax on your electricity, gas and home heating fuels?
  • want to reduce your tax deductibility for charitable gifts?
  • take money from your family budget to pay for their federal budget?

If so, participate in the TAX Day TEA party rally, the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) party.

Bring your cell phone and call Congress and the president while attending the TAX Day TEA party rally (Representative and Senators, 202-224-3121; President, 202-456-1414). Tell Every American about this effort by forwarding this invitation to your friends. Together we can make a difference.

Leftist 'Community Organizing' Infiltrates Churches

The following was published by the Oklahoma Family Policy Council, but the Marxist activity they highlight is occurring throughout the nation among Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish congregations. We would paraphrase the Policy Council's concluding call to their fellow Oklahomans by saying "wake up, fellow Americans! The wolf is in the White House."

Religious Left 3 Pastors Picketing
Some have worried about the influence of the "religious Right." Well, it now appears we can all be concerned about the growing influence of the "religious Left" in Oklahoma.

OFPC has learned that at least 25 Oklahoma City-area churches, through November, 2008, have agreed to pay between $1,500 and $7,500 each year to align themselves with the OKC Metropolitan Area Interfaith Sponsoring Committee. The purpose of such alignment is for the churches to participate in Congregation Based Community Organizing (CBCO), an innocuous-sounding Oklahoma project of the Chicago-based Industrial Areas Foundation.

According to a letter OFPC has obtained that was written by Richard Klinge, an attorney with Oklahoma City-based Catholic Charities, these 25 Oklahoma City-area churches, which include Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, Nazarene, Unitarian, Baptist, and United Church of Christ congregations, will receive training and assistance from IAF experts in CBCO methods. OKC organizers hope that as many as 40 local churches will eventually join the CBCO effort, and IAF expects to have 5,000 "home meetings" by the end of 2009.

OFPC has also learned that similar IAF projects have been organized in past years in both Dallas and Austin, Texas, as well as in other U.S. cities nationwide. What's the big deal, you may ask?

Well, as we know, President Barack Obama learned his organizing and campaign skills--which he has used to pass his so-called "Economic Stimulus" measure in Congress--in the rough-and-tumble of south-side Chicago politics. One person who significantly influenced his thinking and methodology was author-activist Saul D. Alinsky, a radical Marxist, who died in 1972, and never met the Harvard-educated Mr. Obama.

In the late 1930's, Alinsky developed his techniques of "community organizing" as a way to help build an army of poor, minority, disenfranchised Chicagoans, who could be successful at challenging the existing power structures in a corrupt, post-Al Capone urban environment, which would eventually come to be ruled politically beginning in 1955 by Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.

Rules for Radicals CoverMany, though not all, of Alinsky's organizational and political techniques were explained in his 1946 book, Reville for Radicals, and in his better known 1971 book, Rules for Radicals, a book that begins by paying homage to Lucifer as the first radical, who "did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom."

Alinsky taught that "politics was about moving from the world as it is to the world as it should be." He also allegedly coined the term, "think globally, act locally." And, as a Marxist, Alinsky naturally believed the world to be a place constituted by power and domination. Likewise, IAF teaches its disciples how to skillfully manufacture and manage political power.

Barack Obama Teaching Power AnalysisMany Alinsky students have learned well, including Barack Obama, who is shown in this photo teaching University of Chicago law students Alinsky's concepts of "power analysis."

Mr. Obama was influenced by and thought well enough of Alinsky to write a chapter in a book entitled, After Alinsky: Community Organizing in Illinois. At Wellesley College, Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former first lady, senator, and now, U.S. secretary of state, wrote her senior honors thesis in political science, entitled 'There Is Only the Fight...': An Analysis of the Alinsky Model.

This explains the significance of Alinsky, who originally founded the Industrial Areas Foundation Training Institute, and through it, influenced so many others, including activist Cesar Chavez, with his Marxist organizing principles.

Saul Alinsky used the poor to further a radical agenda, while ostensibly helping them. Although the IAF has disavowed some of Alinsky's more extreme views, they still use his methods and seek to work within unsuspecting Catholic and Protestant congregations, and among other constituencies, to further a decidedly liberal agenda. From our research, you won't ever see IAF working with its protégés to encourage conservative principles in public policy.

Archbishop Eusebius J. BeltranOFPC has learned that a battle is now raging privately between conservatives and liberals, priests and parishioners, within Catholic parishes in central Oklahoma. The Most Reverend Eusebius J. Beltran, Archbishop of Oklahoma City, acknowledged as much in a recent article in The Sooner Catholic. We are unaware to what extent other central Oklahoma-area Protestant churches are informed or concerned about IAF's organizing and their liberal mission.

We at OFPC stand with, and are deeply concerned that, our Catholic friends--who have been leaders and allies with Protestant evangelicals through the years in so many important pro-life and marriage-related issues--are now having to defend their churches from those who are attempting to capture the Church in pursuit of a radical agenda, which is at odds with the conservative, traditional, Judeo-Christian, limited government values of most Oklahomans.

America's 30 Years WarNo doubt, it's the caring, compassionate, humane interest of well-meaning parishioners in pursuit of social justice that is encouraging many of these Oklahoma churches to get behind IAF's efforts. How they are being used for Leftist purposes was described by the late Balint Vazsonyi, a Hungarian immigrant and naturalized U.S. citizen, in Chapter 7 of his 2000 book, America's Thirty Years War: Who is Winning?

But, even apart from opposition to the duplicity of IAF because of its Marxist roots, there are other reasons for churches and congregants to be extremely wary.

Speaking of Alinsky, columnist Ryan Lizza, in a 2007 article in The New Republic said, "His legacy is less ideological than methodological. Alinsky's contribution to community organizing was to create a set of rules, a clear-eyed and systemic approach that ordinary citizens can use to gain public power."

Phyllis Schlafly Eagle ForumApparently, Alinsky's IAF, and the people whom they organize, are very effective at it. This phenomenon was acknowledged by Eagle Forum President Phyllis Schlafly in her recent March 20 column.

And, it is IAF's effectiveness and skill that is the real danger for unsuspecting Oklahomans.

For, if a poll were taken, most Oklahomans would surely--today and forever--prefer that their children and grandchildren continue to live in liberty. Most Oklahomans very much like our conservative, pro-life, family-friendly, faith-based, 101-year-old "red" state rather than the socialist, big-government, class-based utopia which IAF activists are so passionately trying to arrange for us.

Wolf Dressed in Sheep's ClothingWake up, fellow Oklahomans! The wolf is at our doors, dressed in sheep's clothing.

Bishop Quits Anglican Church to Fight Jihad

Something is seriously wrong in Christendom when a bishop must resign his position to defend Christians. Isn't that why they are called "shepherds?"

From Front Page Magazine
By Mark D. Tooley

Britain’s leading ecclesiastical critic of radical Islam is retiring early so as to help persecuted Christians suffering under Islamist regimes. Church of England Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali of Rochester aroused jihadist death threats last year when he publicly warned about encroaching Islamism in Britain. Born in Pakistan and from a family that converted away from Islam, Nazir-Ali has championed Britain’s Christian roots and condemned multiculturalist accommodation towards anti-Western ideologies.

“Scourge of Church Liberals to Step Down,” declared one British newspaper about Nazir-Ali, whose family received police protection last year. Besides defending Britain’s traditional British culture against Islamists and multiculturalists, the Bishop of Rochester further irked his critics by siding with African and other Global South bishops against theologically and sexually liberalizing tendencies in Western churches. Last year he skipped the once a decade “Lambeth” gathering of the global Anglican Communion’s bishops, hosted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Instead, he attended an alternative gathering for hundreds of more adamantly orthodox Anglican bishops who convened in Jerusalem, at the invitation of the senior Anglican prelates of Nigeria and Kenya, among others.

Nazir-Ali was a candidate to become the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2003 but was overlooked in favor of Rowan Williams, who fecklessly suggested last year that Britain accommodate some aspects of Islamic law. Only age 59, Nazir-Ali is young enough that he possibly could have been considered for the title when Williams presumably retires in 2014. But Nazir-Ali seems to have been called to a different vocation.

University to Student: Endorse being 'Gay' or Leave

A lawsuit has been filed against Eastern Michigan University, accusing the school of tossing a student out of a graduate counseling program because she refused to endorse homosexuality as morally good.

Julea Ward filed suit after she was dismissed from the school's counseling training for not affirming homosexuality and then refusing to recant her beliefs in "disciplinary proceedings," according to the Alliance Defense Fund Center for Academic Freedom.

WND called president Susan W. Martin's office for comment and was referred to a media relations office, where officials did not respond.

But David French, senior counsel for the ADF, said, "When a public university has a prerequisite of affirming homosexual behavior as morally good in order to obtain a degree, the school is stepping over the legal line."

Ward was dismissed from the program March 12, and the dean of the college of education affirmed the decision on March 26, according to the ADF.

"Julea has a constitutional right not to be compelled to speak a message she disagrees with. She acted as a professional counselor should – with great concern both for her beliefs and the client," ADF legal counsel Jeremy Tedesco explained.

"The two are not incompatible, but EMU's policies are incompatible with the Constitution," he said.

The ADF said EMU "requires students in its program to affirm or validate homosexual behavior within the context of a counseling relationship and prohibits students from advising clients that they can change their homosexual behavior."

The public interest law firm said Ward never has addressed homosexual behavior in any form during counseling sessions.

"Julea did the responsible thing and followed her supervising professor's advice to have the client referred to a counselor who did not have a conscience issue with the very matter to be discussed in counseling," French said. "She would gladly have counseled the client if the subject had been nearly any other matter."

The student was targeted by the school's disciplinary process as a result of her decision, and she was "informed that the only way she could stay in the graduate school counseling program would be if she agreed to undergo a 'remediation' program … to see the 'error of her ways,'" ADF said.

The goal was to have Ward "change her 'belief system,' as it relates to counseling about homosexual relationships, conforming her beliefs to be consistent with the university's views," the law firm said.

She refused and was given the choice of leaving voluntarily or having a formal review.

ADF-allied attorney Steven Jentzen of Ypsilanti, Mich., is serving as local counsel in the case.

The ADF Center for Academic Freedom defends religious freedom at America's public universities. ADF is a legal alliance of Christian attorneys and like-minded organizations defending the right of people to freely live out their faith.

Obama: The First 50 Days

Father Alphonse de Valk of Catholic Insight Magazine has documented the policies and appointments that constitute the most demonic and ambitious assault on human life and the family ever waged in the United States. That assault, by Obama and his appointees, is gaining momentum. With permission, we are pleased to reprint Father de Valk's documentation of the first fifty days of Obama's campaign for a culture of death.

Obama has appointed one vice-president, 13 secretaries, four directors, five legal counsels and 13 White House staff for a total of 36 people. Of these, 23 are known to be pro-abortion. Of the remaining 13, only one is known to be pro-life (the secretary of transportation); the views of the others are unknown to us. Of the White House staff, none are known to be pro-life.

In addition, the vice-president, five secretaries and one director (that of the CIA) are Catholics. All of them, however, disown the Church’s teaching on the dignity and protection of all human life, from conception to natural death.

We would appreciate receiving notices of any documentable errors and omissions in this tabulation, so that it may be corrected as need be.

The anti-life assault begins

The election of Barack Obama as president, Catholic Insight stated in a November 3, 2008 press release, would turn out to be a disaster for the advance of a pro-life culture.

On the most important cultural issue of all, the equality and dignity of all human beings before God, he represents the greatest threat today, even more so than the notorious Marxist revolution of 1917 with its attack on the family. That revolution was rejected by the Western world. On the other hand, Obama's leadership is being hailed as a sign of hope across the world and welcomed with open arms. Obama has a 100 per cent approval rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America, the U.S.’s leading pro-abortion organization. That rating is based on a record of consistently voting against the unborn.

Obama has told Planned Parenthood he regards so-called choice as “a fundamental issue” on which he will not yield. He voted against an Induced Infant Liability Act in the Illinois legislature in 2002; this would have given legal protection and medical assistance to babies born from botched abortions. He also voted against banning partial-birth abortion in the Senate in October 2007.

On another key issue, the integrity of the traditional family, in 2004 Obama called the Defence of Marriage Act an “abhorrent law” and added: “The repeal of DOMA is essential ... For the record, I opposed DOMA in 1996. It should be repealed and I will vote for its repeal on the Senate floor. I will also oppose any proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gays and lesbians from ‘marrying.’”

“We must be careful to keep our eyes on the prize – equal rights for every American,” he has told homosexual activists. “We must continue to fight for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). We must vigorously expand hate-crime legislation and be vigilant about how these laws are enforced. We must continue to expand adoption rights to make them consistent and seamless throughout all 50 states and we must repeal the ‘don't ask, don't tell’ military policy.”
