Coventry Children's Choir - 'Let All the World in Every Corner Sing'

The Coventry Children's Choir sings George Dyson's 'Let all the world in every corner sing.' Conductor Rupert Jeffcoat and organist Diane Bish.

http://www.coventrycathedral.org.uk/whats-on/music/cathedral-choirs.php

Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King!
The heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly,
the earth is not too low, his praises there may grow.
Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King!

Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King!
The church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out;
but, above all, the heart must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King!

BBC's Sacred Music Series - Pt 1 of 4 'The Gothic Revolution'

The following is the first of a four part BBC documentary in which actor and former chorister Simon Russell Beale explores the flowering of Western sacred music.  It is a beautiful survey of "a thousand years of praise through song" and some of the greatest music "ever written for the human voice." We will be posting the rest of this documentary over the next three Saturdays.

Like Lord Clark's landmark "Civilisation" documentary which we have posted previously, this series is a tribute to and reminder of the great patrimony of  Western, Christian civilization.

What "Big Deals" Did to America

By Patrick J. Buchanan

Thanks to Tea Party fanatics, we are told, America just lost an historic opportunity to deal with her national debt.

Because of Tea Party intransigence and threats against their own leader John Boehner, the speaker had to reject Obama's "grand bargain," the "big deal" of $3 trillion in budget cuts for $1 trillion in "revenue enhancement."

These crazed ideologues, the Tea Partiers, we are told by the talking heads, just do not understand that governing is about compromise.

SC House Delegation Among Those Opposing Boehner's Plan

We are proud and grateful for South Carolina's Republican House delegation and Senator DeMint for standing strong and fighting for real cuts in federal spending, a reduction in the size of government, and a return to honest money and responsible leadership.  Please thank and encourage these good men in their historic battle:

Tim Scott 202-225-3176

Joe Wilson 202-225-2452

Jeff Duncan 202-225-5301

Trey Gowdy 202-225-6030

Mick Mulvaney 202-225-5501
From Taylors-Wade Hampton Patch
Rep. Trey Gowd
With the country less than a week away from potentially defaulting on its debt, South Carolina’s Republican delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives is going against party leadership.
According to multiple media outlets, Trey Gowdy (pictured), Jeff Duncan, Joe Wilson and Tim Scott have opposed House Speaker John Boehner’s plan to raise the debt ceiling and stave off default.

It was thought that the bill would go to a vote on Thursday evening. But when it was not certain that it would pass, the vote was called off. Negotiations are expected to continue throughout the day on Friday.

Vatican Nuncio to US Archbishop Sambi Dies

From CNS

Archbishop Sambi greets guests at a papal audience last year.

Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the apostolic nuncio to the United States for more than five years, died tonight, apparently from complications of lung surgery performed approximately three weeks earlier.

Last Friday, the nunciature announced that the archbishop had been “placed on assisted ventilation to attempt recovery of his lung function” after undergoing “a delicate lung surgery two weeks ago.”

Archbishop Sambi was 73.

Tomb of St. Philip the Apostle Discovered in Turkey

A portrait of St. Philip from around 1611, by the Italian painter Peter Paul Rubens, at the Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain.

A tomb believed to be that of St. Philip the Apostle was unearthed during excavations in the ancient Turkish city of Hierapolis.

Italian professor Francesco D'Andria said archeologists found the tomb of the biblical figure -- one of the 12 original disciples of Jesus -- while working on the ruins of a newly-unearthed church, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported Wednesday.

SC Focus on the Family Affiliate Says Perry’s Views on NY Gay Marriage are ‘Slippery’

Brokeback Governor Rick Perry "OK" with gay "marriage."
By Sofia Resnick

Oran Smith
The leader of South Carolina’s Focus on the Family affiliate, the Palmetto Family Council, was among several conservative leaders recently asked to weigh in on the same-sex-marriage views of speculated presidential contender Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Like many of the other leaders, Palmetto Family President Oran Smith was less than impressed with the Republican governor’s view on gay marriage:

Cardinal Zen Skewers Atheist China's Attempt to Run the Catholic Church

It is absurd to hear the statements of politically correct state puppets defending Beijing's policies

Statement of Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun
Hong Kong
July 26, 2011

These last few days, Catholic faithful inside and outside China have noted with sadness and indignation words pronounced by Anthony Liu Bainian and Reverends Joseph Guo Jincai, Johan Fang Xingyao and Joseph Yang Yu, which are hardly distinguishable from being schismatic. But yesterday’s statement by the State Administration for Religious Affairs (SARA) has reached the extreme of absurdity.

We may understand if the government comes out to defend their puppets by saying that they are politically correct, or to praise their courage in resisting foreign pressure; but now they come out to praise their “ardent Catholic faith” and to say that the ordinations without papal mandate are necessary for “the normal running of the Church and for the needs of pastoral and evangelizing activity.”  This is absolutely preposterous and ridiculous, given that as some scholars have recently pointed out, the government is now “running” the Catholic Church.

Ed Koch Endorses Republican for Weiner's Seat

From Newsmax
By Edward Koch

Why I Endorse a Republican for Weiner's Seat

I am here this morning to suggest that the contested race in New York's 9th Congressional District be turned into a referendum that will allow the voters of this district, the largest Jewish district in the country, to register a protest against the positions of President Barack Obama and the Republican leadership on a number of key issues.

President Obama, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have failed the American public in several ways. Two issues come readily to mind.

One is jobs. Not a single law that would provide jobs in our country has been adopted. We are now suffering from a 9.2 percent unemployment rate. Both parties have failed miserably to address this vitally important issue.

14 Reasons Why Rick Perry Would Be A Really, Really Bad President

Supporters of Texas Governor Rick Perry are not going to like this article at all. Right now, Republicans all over the United States are touting Rick Perry as the "Republican messiah" that is going to come charging in to save America from the presidency of Barack Obama. Many believe that if Rick Perry enters the race, he will instantly become the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. Perry certainly looks the part and he knows how to give a good speech, but when ordinary Americans all over the country take a hard look at his record, they may not like what they see.

Catholic Artists Say Art Must Reflect Liturgical Renewal

At a recent symposium on the campus of the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, leading Catholic artists agreed that liturgical piety is at the foundation of a culture of beauty.  When art and architecture—and the culture as a whole—is deeply rooted in the liturgy it serves, liturgical piety is reinforced.

Father Thomas Kocik, contributor to the New Liturgical Movement web site and former editor of Antiphon, chaired the discussion.  He began the evening by emphasizing this link between the liturgy and culture.

A Fire Bell in the Night for Norway

By Patrick J. Buchanan

"Like a fire bell in the night," wrote Thomas Jefferson in 1820, "this momentous question ... awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once as the knell of the Union."

Jefferson was writing of the sudden resurgence of the slavery issue in the debate on Missouri's entry into the Union, as foreshadowing a civil war.

And that massacre in Oslo, where a terrorist detonated a fertilizer bomb to decapitate the government and proceeded to a youth camp to kill 68 children of Norway's ruling elite, is a fire bell in the night for Europe. For Anders Behring Breivik is no Islamic terrorist.

Vietnam Re-Arrests Ailing Dissident Priest Van Ly

 From BBC News

One of Vietnam's best-known dissidents, Catholic priest Nguyen Van Ly, has been re-arrested more than a year after getting medical leave from prison.

Fr Nguyen Van Ly
Sources told journalists he had been escorted by police from a church in the Hue area of central Vietnam.

The government said he had been distributing anti-government writings.

His eight-year prison sentence for subversion had been suspended in March of last year to allow him to seek treatment for a brain tumour.

The condition of his health was not clear following news of his re-arrest on Monday.

Fr Ly, who is in his 60s, suffered two strokes in 2009 that left him partly paralysed, and Western governments had demanded repeatedly that he be freed.

His original trial made news headlines as he tried to read out a poem criticising Vietnam's communist authorities and was muzzled by police.

He has spent more than 15 years in prison since 1977.

In 2009 a group of 37 US senators wrote to Vietnam's President Nguyen Minh Triet, calling for the priest's release.

The Roman Catholic clergyman was a founding member of Bloc 8406, a pro-democracy movement launched in 2006.

The Skeletons in Rick Perry's Closet

"For all his new found commitment to hyper-conservatism," said the former GOP presidential candidate, "he'll get to explain why he supported pro-abortion, pro-same sex marriage Rudy Guiliani last time."
By Brian Montopoli

Texas governor Rick Perry looks, at the moment, like the man many Republicans have been waiting for. Perry has yet to enter the presidential race - he looks likely to do so in August - but he is already polling close to ostensible frontrunner Mitt Romney.

The buzz around Perry isn't just driven by the polling. It's grounded in the fact that Perry could potentially bridge the divide between the Tea Party conservatives and the party establishment. To borrow a phrase from Perry's predecessor in the Texas governor's office, who went on to bigger things: Perry could be a uniter, not a divider, that the GOP is desperate to find.

Egan Jones Cuts US Rating, Cites High Debt Load

It's not the debt ceiling, but the Obama administration's unsustainable debt load that has already caused a down-grading of the US credit rating.

From Reuters
Credit rating agency Egan-Jones has cut the United States' top credit ranking, citing concerns over the country's high debt load and the difficulty the government faces in significantly reducing spending.

California Diocese Offers $50M for Crystal Cathedral

The Diocese of Orange has offered $50 million to purchase Crystal Cathedral, the 3,000-seat Protestant church built by televangelist Robert Schuller.

The bid, said Bishop Tod Brown, “respects the legacy Rev. Schuller worked so hard to establish. Our offer also clearly accommodates future diocesan needs for a cathedral and modern administrative campus.”

Bishop Brown added:
Crystal Cathedral Ministries has been a valued religious resource for many, many years in Orange County and, through the Hour of Power, around the globe. Like our own Mission San Juan Capistrano, its historic and cultural links are important to Orange County. Under this plan, we hope that that ministry can continue.

Dr. Schuller built up this ministry from the humble roof of a drive-in snack stand, and that constant faith in God’s providence, I believe, will sustain their community through these current trials. The Crystal Cathedral underscores the vitality of faith in our modern society and with our offer we will enable this beacon of faith to continue to influence others as an important place of worship.

To Restore America, Draft a Tea Party Patriot

It is a sad fact that our system for picking presidential candidates has become one in which only those with burning ambition can make it through a multi-year process that includes caucuses and primaries, followed by a punishing national campaign.

Much criticism has been leveled at the older system whereby regional party leaders selected the nominee at national party conventions. But those party leaders, seeking the most impressive and thus electable candidate they could find, almost always chose well. Their candidates were men known for character and achievement; they were invariably men of faith; and they were typically men of means, who had not relied on a government position for their livelihoods. Like George Washington, they were drafted into service. Some accepted the nomination more eagerly than others.

President Reagan admired the principled, conservative leadership of Calvin Coolidge. Democrat Grover Cleveland was as principled and as fiscally conservative as any man who ever served in the presidency. Today, it is hard to imagine men such as these, willing to sacrifice family and the harmonies of the good life, in order to raise and spend millions while enduring the insults, the pain, and the suffering that accompany the presidential nominating process.

Unfortunately, a system that rewards "fire in the belly" ambition for power usually results in political leaders who are only too willing to use all the levers of power, while spending the taxpayer’s money in the process. The bad fruit of power-hungry political leadership has become quite apparent in recent Democrat and Republican administrations.

Members of the Tea Party movement are coming to the realization that the continuation of the current process will simply yield more of the same power-hungry charlatans -- Romney, Perry and Obama.

In response, South Carolinians, recognizing that they have a highly principled, gifted, and humble servant-leader in our own Senator Jim DeMint, are testing whether a man not consumed with ambition, but rather a desire to serve in a perilous time, can still make it to the nation's highest office. With support from Congressmen Jeff Duncan and Trey Gowdy, along with dozens of South Carolina Republican officials, two individuals -- Javan Browder of South Carolina and Laura O'Halloran of Louisiana -- are heading a grassroots movement in more than 30 states urging Jim DeMint to enter the presidential race.

Jim DeMint's candidacy would give the national Tea Party movement the focus and unity it needs. More importantly, it would fulfill an urgent need and answer the prayers of patriots throughout America who yearn to see the restoration of the City on a Hill – a nation blessed by God, which favors constitutional government that is limited in size, safeguards freedom, lives within its means, and stands proudly once again -- not only because America is strong, but because America is good.

Those wishing to support the Draft Jim DeMint movement should contact Javan Browder on FaceBook, by E-mail: javanjorie@yahoo.com, or by phone at (864) 414-3920.

House Panel Urges Turkey to Return Churches and Religious Sites to 'Rightful Owners'

Patriarch Bartholomew holds a wooden cross in Istanbul
A US congressional committee on Wednesday urged Turkey to ensure religious freedom and return church properties to their "rightful owners" in a vote opposed by the Ankara government.

After a spirited debate, the House Foreign Affairs Committee approved a text that says Turkey should "end all forms of religious discrimination" and "return to their rightful owners" all churches and other Christian historic sites.

Libera Returns to the US This Summer!

Performances in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Chicago, St. Louis,
Frisco/Dallas and Houston

July 24 - August 9, 2011

The boys who make up the South London based vocal band Libera have been described as “normal” and “ordinary”; however, as their recordings and performances demonstrate, the music they produce is anything but. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies, they are unlike any other group you have ever heard. These are truly sounds to lift the soul. Celestial sounds for a new time.

Familiar to audiences across the world, the boys have a stunningly original sound, which is at once both ancient and modern. Their distinctive flowing white robes symbolise the traditional origins of their style - yet their music reaches across the generations to a new mainstream audience. Libera’s success in album charts around the world bears witness to the extraordinary appeal of this unique ‘boy band’. Enchanting audiences wherever they go, they have attracted an enthusiastic fan base in many countries, particularly the US, UK, Japan, the Philippines and Korea.

They've sung for President Bush, have been featured at the Kennedy Center Honors, on Hour of Power and PBS. You may have heard them on the radio or in film soundtracks. Don't miss the chance to experience them - sight and sound - LIVE this summer!

Obama Supports Bill to Repeal Federal Gay Marriage Ban

By Alex Murashko

President Barack Obama appeared to take one step closer to officially endorsing same-sex marriage Tuesday by supporting a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

The bill, which is being introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein in the Senate on Wednesday, aims to overturn the 15-year-old law that denies federal benefits for same-sex couples. Hearings on the law that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman are scheduled for this week.

President Obama is "proud to support" the Respect for Marriage Act, the White House announced Tuesday.

The State of the Arts and the Restoration of Beauty: An Interview with David Clayton

David Clayton is Thomas More College’s Artist-in-Residence and is an internationally known painter of icons. David trained in natural sciences at Oxford University, and studied drawing and painting at Charles Cecil Studios at Florence, Italy. He was taught iconography by Aidan Hart in England. He has received commissions at churches and monasteries in Europe and the US, including the London Oratory, and has illustrated a variety of Catholic books, most recently one by scripture scholar Scott Hahn. He has recently appeared on EWTN talking about his work and the Way of Beauty programme. David has also worked with Catholic TV in Boston on a 13-part series called The Way of Beauty.

I recently spoke with David about the state of art in the West and some of the means by which he and others are working to restore an authentic vision of beauty, goodness, and truth in art, both in the Church and in the secular realm. Here is our conversation.

Ignatius Insight: What has been the state of the fine arts, in general, in the West since the middle of the twentieth century?

David Clayton: The best way of summing up the whole thing is a quote from Pope Benedict XVI in his book, The Spirit of the Liturgy: “The Enlightenment pushed faith into a kind of intellectual and even social ghetto. Contemporary culture turned away from the faith and trod another path, so that faith took flight in historicism, the copying of the past, or else attempted compromise or lost itself in resignation and cultural abstinence.”

From the middle of the 18th century onwards we see a steady separation of the culture of faith and the broader culture. This means that in the context of art, mainstream art reflected the values of the Enlightenment. Initially, the difference was small. Up to the end of the 19th century, the basic training of artists was the same but the connection with Catholic theology, philosophy and liturgical principles was lost. Stylistically, the manifestation of this was very subtle but real. In the 19th century you see a dualism reflected in a divergence of artistic styles from a Christian balance in the center: on the one hand there was cold and over polished sterile “realism”, or on the other hand an over-emotional Romanticism. This should be contrasted with17th century baroque art, which is authentically Catholic and has a balance of resemblance to natural appearances and idealization.

Archbishop Chaput to Lead Philadelphia Archdiocese

Listen

Archbishop Charles Chaput
Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Charles Chaput to succeed Cardinal Justin Rigali as Archbishop of Philadelphia on Tuesday. Until the new appointment, Archbishop Chaput had been the head of the Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado. The 66 year-old Archbishop Chaput is part Native American and the first Native American U.S. archbishop. He entered the Capuchin Order of Friars Minor in 1965 and made his perpetual vows in 1968, receiving ordination to the priesthood in 1970. After a tenure as minister of the Capuchin province of Mid-America, he was elected bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota - a position in which he served for nearly a decade, before being called to Denver in 1997.

The Long Retreat of Liberalism

By Patrick J. Buchanan

Though President Obama has run rings about the Republican Party in the debt-ceiling debate, that party can yet emerge victorious, if it will stick to its guns.

Clearly, the Republican strategy was not thought through, when the party chose the debt ceiling as the legislative terrain on which to fight its fiscal war.

The president had wanted a clean debt-ceiling increase, but he seized the GOP challenge with alacrity. He invited House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor down to the White House and reportedly offered $3 trillion in spending cuts for $1 trillion in fresh revenue, in a historic "big deal" to cut the deficit.

James O'Keefe Exposes Corrupt Ohio State Employees and Medicaid Fraud

James O'Keefe and his Project Veritas have once again exposed Obamanation corruption.  This time Project Veritas investigators posed as Russian drug smugglers who drive an $800,000 car and whose underage "sisters" provide sexual services to business associates.  With that background on the table, Ohio state workers coach the two Veritas investigators on how to obtain Medicaid benefits and Planned Parenthood abortions for their underage sisters.

But these state employees have nothing to fear; Obama, loyal to his ACORN roots, announced today that he will veto any attempt to rein in profligate government spending and welfare fraud and abuse.  Take a look at "hope and change" in the American heartland.

2nd Chinese Bishop Excommunicated, Vatican Announces. 'This is War.'

 From Catholic World News

The Vatican has officially announced the excommunication of the Chinese bishop ordained on July 14 in defiance of the Holy See.

This was the 2nd public announcement of excommunication of a Chinese bishop within the past month, as the escalating conflict between Rome and Beijing prompted one prominent prelate to say: “This is war.”

A Statist and Corporate Juggernaut has Destroyed the Olympics Movement

The following story makes clear that China is engaged in child abuse for the sake of Olympic Gold.  We suspect that to some degree that is occurring in other nations as well.

There is an excellent summary here of the holistic and noble ideals that inspired the ancient Olympics and moved Pierre de Coubertin to revive them in the 19th century.  Unfortunately, the founders' intent to develop the whole person - body, mind and spirit - has been transformed by a statist and corporate juggernaut into something deformed that in too many cases is unhealthy and destructive to the athletes.  It's long past time to reform the Olympic Movement, remove the governmental and corporate influences, and restore the intent of its ancient and modern founders.  That refocus will do far more for the life of participating nations than will the accumulation of gold medals.

China has changed dramatically since it began reforming its Communist system three decades ago. But one vestige of Soviet-style central planning remains in its "juguo" or "whole nation" sports system.
Outsiders who have glimpsed inside the Chinese National Gymnastics centre, like Sir Matthew Pinsent, have been dismayed by what they saw.  Photo: PA
ByMalcolm Moore

Under the "whole nation" system, China roots out talented young children and puts them in special academies from as young as four years old.

If they are able to progress, athletes who make the cut are put into a relentless training programme, filled with targets they must regularly hit, and paid by the government a monthly wage of between 1,000 yuan and 3,000 yuan a month (£96 to £288).

Each year, the best athletes are sent to national training centres in Beijing, where they compete to enter China's national team. If they succeed, they will move with their families into the training centre and live there all year round.

Thousands Mourn Last Heir of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Otto Von Habsburg

Thousands of mourners, many in regalia suggesting a bygone age, joined European royalty for the funeral of Archduke Otto von Habsburg, the last Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary.

Royals including the King and Queen of Sweden mingled with Tyrolean rifleman in full ceremonial dress inside Vienna’s St. Stephen's Cathedral.

In the cobbled square outside, thousands crowded round large screens to watch the funeral on Saturday of a man who had been exiled from Austria for nearly 50 years, from 1918 to 1966.

The colourful costumes and plumed helmets reflected the imperial majesty into which von Habsburg, who died on July 4 aged 98, had been born.

The eldest son of Charles I, the last Austrian emperor, he was born in November 1912, less than two years before the start of the First World War which was to lead to the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

BOEING IS A GREAT AMERICAN COMPANY. Recently it has built a second production line—its other is in Washington State—in South Carolina for its 787 Dreamliner airplane, creating 1,000 jobs there so far. Who knows what factors led to its decision to do this? As with all such business decisions, there were many. But the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)—a five-member agency created in 1935 by the Wagner Act (about which I will speak momentarily)—has taken exception to this decision, ultimately based on the fact that South Carolina is a right-to-work state. That is, South Carolina, like 21 other states today, protects a worker’s right not only to join a union, but also to make the choice not to join or financially support a union. Washington State does not. The general counsel of the NLRB, on behalf of the International Association of Machinists union, has issued a complaint against Boeing, which, if successful, would require it to move its South Carolina operation back to Washington State. This would represent an unprecedented act of intervention by the federal government that appears, on its face, un-American. But it is an act long in the making, and boils down to a fundamental misunderstanding of freedom.

Where does this story begin?

Pope Benedict XVI’s Sorrow over Illicit Episcopal Ordinations in China

An event that is being followed “with sorrow and concern” because it is contrary to “the unity of the Universal Church”: this is how the Director of the Vatican Press Office, Father Federico Lombardi, commented on the news that Father Joseph Huang Bingzhang had been illicitly ordained bishop in Shantou, China. A number of bishops, who are in communion with the Pope, were obliged to participate in the ceremony.

Gary Glenn to Explore U.S. Senate Race Against Stabenow

The best political news we've heard in years!  Our friend, mentor and contributing editor of Sunlit Uplands has announced he is considering a race for the United States Senate against Debbie Stabenow.  This will offer the voters of Michigan the clearest choice they have had in decades, should be the most important race for every patriot concerned about the direction of our country, and knowing Gary's extraordinary political skills, will be great fun to watch.

Gary is a true Christian leader, a gentleman and a patriot.  Michigan has the opportunity to do something great for America in this race.

Dear family and friends,

I jumped off the high dive today.  But if we don't all do something to stop it, our country as we know it is on the brink of being lost, and I feel compelled to do whatever I can to help protect and preserve for our kids what we all love about America.

Lord willing, I can get there and help men like Jim DeMint, Rand Paul, and Mike Lee demand and fight for restoration of the limited government principles of our Constitution.

Please check out my new website: www.garyglenn.us

And please be sure to visit this page of the site in particular(Thank you in advance!)

Please also keep Annette and the kids and me in your prayers in the months ahead, as we face this challenge together.  We deeply appreciate your love, friendship, and support...

Salute, and thanks!
Gary

Another Apology Is in Order, Archbishop Dolan

By Julie Collorafi

Archbishop Dolan and Governor Cuomo: Fraternal Correction or Affirmation?
Last week on his blog the Archbishop of New York gamely offered his post-game analysis of the momentous struggle in Albany over the same-sex marriage bill.

Among the noteworthy points Archbishop Dolan made was a handsome acknowledgement of the efforts of the "millions" of many faiths who went to the state capitol or made and sent hundreds of thousands of phone calls and emails in those tumultuous two weeks.

However, it’s difficult to understand why the prestigious prelate, almost in the same breath, found it necessary to extend a lengthy apology to the members of the gay community offended by his "strenuous defense of marriage."

Many Catholics like myself are thankful for the public statements Archbishop Dolan made opposing the bill in the final days before its passage, especially in the conspicuous absence of similar statements from his brother bishops in the New York Catholic Bishops Conference. The affable Metropolitan was far more visible in the thick of the fight than the other New York bishops, but, really, one can hardly describe a radio interview, a blog post and one Sunday morning sermon at St. Patrick’s Cathedral as a "strenuous defense of marriage," especially when hundreds of ministers of other faiths traveled to Albany, lobbied lawmakers in person for days, and demonstrated on the streets at pro-traditional marriage rallies across the state.

New York Catholics remember well that their bishops spared no effort or expense last year to organize the laity in opposing a bill to suspend the statute of limitations in clerical abuse cases. Urgent messages appeared for weeks in parish bulletins and busloads of clergy and laypeople journeyed to Albany where the bill was successfully halted, so a similar campaign against same-sex marriage was expected this time around.

Inexplicably, however, the New York bishops barely responded to the far more pressing situation last month. Many traditional marriage supporters in Albany were dismayed by the absence of Catholic priests and bishops at the state capitol and were stunned to discover in the first critical week of negotiations that Archbishop Dolan and the entire New York Catholic Bishops’ Conference had quietly skipped town to attend a USCCB meeting in Seattle.

Even the New York Times commented on the anemic, lack-lustre response of the New York Catholic bishops, a response that was mystifying given the far-reaching and disastrous effects experts agree this new law will have on religious liberty and the relationship between church and state in New York.

Despite Archbishop Dolan’s inspiring allusions in his post to St. John the Baptist and St. Thomas More who both lost their heads for opposing the degradation of marriage, the fact remains that, unlike the example of these two valiant and prophetic men, the New York Catholic Bishops’ participation in the campaign against same-sex marriage was amazingly flaccid and inept.

Most observers will agree that a certain former NFL football player exhibited far more courage than most Catholic bishops when he ventured into public to deliver his own resounding message against the marriage equality bill. (In my opinion, David Tyree delivered a far more articulate and theologically sound defense of traditional marriage in his brave video interview than clerics with miles of credentials and an abundance of doctrinal and pastoral expertise.)

If the Archbishop insists on apologizing to gays for his mild statements opposing same-sex marriage, then he also owes an apology to all the faithful Catholics who spent weeks in the trenches protesting our Democrat governor's vigorous and concerted attack on traditional marriage.

Much more than the gay community, we deserve our bishops’ sincere regrets for not supporting our efforts and for failing to explain tirelessly in a clear, compassionate and rational way Catholic doctrine on marriage and sexual morality.

Vatican: Chinese Catholics Should Not Receive Sacraments from Bishops Involved in Consecration

Fr. Joseph Huang Bingzhang illicitly ordained by the Communist government of China for the Shantou diocese.

The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples is urging Catholics in China not to receive sacraments administered by Father Paul Lei Shiyin, who was illicitly consecrated Bishop of Leshan without a pontifical mandate, and by the seven bishops who consecrated him.

China 'Kidnaps' Bishops to Stage Catholic Ordination

China has ordained another bishop without the Pope's approval and allegedly kidnapped four bishops to witness the ceremony, in its fiercest act of defiance against the Vatican yet.

In a three hour-long morning ceremony, China's government-run Catholic church ordained the Reverend Joseph Huang Bingzhang as the new bishop of the southern city of Shantou.

It is the third time in eight months that the Communist party - which insists that it, rather than the Pope, controls China's church - has appointed a bishop without a Papal mandate.

Thursday's ceremony was particularly controversial after four bishops loyal to the Vatican were taken away by Chinese police and allegedly forced to participate.

New York Clerk Resigns over Gay ‘Marriage’: Gov. Cuomo Responds, ‘The Law is the Law’

A few days ago we wrote about an effort undertaken by a group of concerned New Yorkers who are asking that Archbishop Timothy Dolan enforce Canon Law Code 915, and refuse Holy Communion to Governor Andrew Cuomo and other Catholic politicians supporting same-sex "marriage" until they have publicly repented of their actions.

Governor Cuomo has now provided the Archbishop with the justification and response to anyone opposing the enforcement of Code 915: "the law is the law," the Governor says.  Indeed, Cuomo believes that "if you can’t enforce the law, then you shouldn’t be in that position."  It seems to us that should also apply to those responsible for enforcing the Church's laws.

The ball is in your court, Your Excellency.

Reacting to the news that the first New York State town clerk has resigned rather than sign her name on a same-sex “marriage” license, Gov. Andrew Cuomo insisted Tuesday that “the law is the law.”

“When you enforce the laws of the state, you don’t get to pick and choose which laws,” he said, according to the NY Daily News. “You don’t get to say, ‘I like this law and I’ll enforce this law, or I don’t like this law and I won’t enforce this law’ - you can’t do that.”

“So if you can’t enforce the law, then you shouldn’t be in that position,” he added.

Laura Fotusky, a clerk in the town of Barker, announced her resignation Monday on the website of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms. “I cannot put my signature on something that is against God,” she wrote in her resignation letter. “The Bible clearly teaches that God created marriage between male and female as a divine gift that preserves families and cultures.”

"Metropolitan Mission" to Launch the New Evangelization of Europe

Archbishop Salvatore (“Rino”) Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council, has outlined plans for the re-evangelization of Europe.  The proposal will be launched next Lent in large diocesan cathedrals and if successful, will be rolled out to parishes and  other dioceses.

The Archbishop's plans for a "Metropolitan mission" were published yesterday in L'Osservatore Romano.

The new evangelization in Europe

Metropolitan Mission

To avoid the risk of the new evangelization becoming just another formula adapted for every season, it is important that it be filled with content which informs the pastoral action of the different Christian communities. In this sense, everyday pastoral work, which has always animated the life of the Church, must renew its ways of presenting itself and implementing its activities.

Benedict XVI, speaking to the first plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, said that it was of decisive importance to go beyond the fragmentation of society and offer concrete answers to the great challenges of today. To fill this need, a “metropolitan mission” has been put into action. The goal is simple: to give a sign of unity among the diverse dioceses present in the largest European cities that have been particularly affected by secularization.
