Today’s feast is one of the most theologically profound of the year

The recent slew of feasts – Pentecost, Ascension, Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christi, Ss Peter and Paul – has been a pleasant reminder to me of the continuing fecundity of the Catholic tradition. And it comes to a climax – at least this will be the last solemnity of the Lord until we reach the end of the liturgical year with Christ the King – with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart today, the second Friday after Pentecost.
The Sacred Heart to me represents one of the most important feasts of the year from a theological perspective. It is the feast of the flesh that was taken up by the Son of God. It is thus the feast of love made incarnate for us in the person of Our Lord. It is our way of celebrating what made the people of the Holy Land so happy during the earthly ministry of Jesus, namely, the presence of our loving Saviour among us.

Scholars authenticate a painting that was missing for centuries

A painting by Leonardo da Vinci that was lost for centuries has been authenticated by distinguished scholars in the United States and Europe and will be exhibited at London's National Gallery as part of a Leonardo show that opens November 9, ARTnews has learned.
The painting, Salvator Mundi, or "Savior of the World," depicts Christ with his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand holding a globe. It is painted in oil on a wood panel and measures 26 by 18 1/2 inches in size.
"It's up there with any artistic discovery of the last 100 years," said one scholar.

Independence Day Weekend: Michigan Coalition Seeks Freedom to Work
Terry Bowman, Ypsilanti, a United Auto Workers Local 898 member, was among union members and others who announced formation of the Michigan Freedom to Work coalition during a noon news conference at the state Capitol in Lansing. Coalition members also held news conferences in Escanaba, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Flint, during which they unveiled the group’s new website – MIFreedomtoWork.com -- constructed by coalition volunteers.
“As we prepare to celebrate our country’s freedom, we’re announcing a new coalition of Americans fighting for freedom here in Michigan, the freedom to hold a job whether we belong or give money to a union or not,” Bowman said. “The Michigan Freedom to Work coalition believes all employees should be free to join and financially support a labor union. We believe employees should be equally free not to join or financially support a union, without fear of discrimination or penalty either way.”
