Cardinal Mahony, Archbishop Myers Keep the Scandal Alive

By Philip F. Lawler

Last Friday I was rejoicing over the news that one American archbishop, at least, finally seemed to “get it” regarding the sex-abuse scandal. Now I’m afraid I was celebrating too soon. Cardinal Is Relieved Of Public Duties For Past Failure To Protect Children

The disgraced and disgraceful former Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles

When  Cardinal Roger Mahony was engaged in criminal conspiracy and cover-ups, he was internationally known for trying to silence one of the great saints of our time, Mother Angelica, and attempting to seize her extraordinary work, EWTN, a worldwide television and radio network that has reached millions.  He will account to God for his heterodox leadership  of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles; but for the way he criminally harmed those entrusted to his care, we hope he will face a long prison sentence.

Archbishop Gómez to Succeed Cardinal Mahony in Los Angeles

We don't know Archbishop José Gómez, the newly appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles, but we trust this is another superb appointment by Pope Benedict, and his affiliation with Opus Dei gives us added confidence. We look forward to his taking sole responsibility for the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 326 days, 12 hours, and 49 minutes -- but who's counting?

Pope Benedict XVI has named Archbishop José Gómez of San Antonio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles. Born in Mexico in 1951 and ordained a priest of Opus Dei in 1978, Archbishop Gómez was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Denver in 2001 and Archbishop of San Antonio in 2004.

Archbishop Gómez will become Archbishop of Los Angeles upon the retirement of 74-year-old Cardinal Roger Mahony, who has led the United States' largest diocese since 1985.
